Eagles head into short week standing as lone unbeaten at 7-0

PHILADELPHIA.— A.J. Brown had already caught three touchdown passes and was running toward his fourth when — boom! — he got caught from behind and had to settle for a mere 43-yard gain.

“My teammates gave me a hard time for that,” Brown said, laughing. “I definitely felt like I was going to score. (The defender) did a good job of swiping my legs and getting me down. I was upset. I think that was the first time I got caught in the NFL.”

Brown and the Eagles could afford the chuckle after a 35-13 laugher Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers that moved the only undefeated team in the league to 7-0.

The Eagles had more fun on the sideline: Jason Kelce playfully wore a Batman mask in a nod to the superhero nicknames assigned to their wide receivers. Brown is “ Swole Batman. ”

Only an epic collapse could keep Philadelphia from an NFC East title. Only serious injuries could derail what should be a serious run toward the Super Bowl.

Why should the Phillies and Union have all the fun?

Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes to Brown in the first half and finished with 285 yards and four TDs overall. Brown had six receptions for 156 yards. The Eagles are 7-0 for the second time in franchise history, joining the 2004 team that reached the Super Bowl.

“I think we just want to be great,” Brown said.

Eagles tackle Lane Johnson had a clear view of what impressed him most about Brown.

“Just catching those balls, and doing whatever the hell he wants to over the top,” Johnson said. “He just had a hell of a game. Just one of those games where I’m sitting back there blocking and I see the ball up there and I see him make catch after catch. Special player.”

Brown sparked laughter during the game when he taunted two fallen Steelers and pointed at each of them after his third TD catch of the first half.

“I just said, ‘One, two, it’s not enough,’” Brown said with a laugh.

Brown has been a huge hit in first season with the Eagles after he was acquired in a draft-day deal with the Titans. Tennessee wasn’t interested in making Brown one of the highest-paid receivers in the league. The Eagles bit, and now Brown has his money and an undefeated team.

WHAT’S WORKING

The offense. The offense. The offense. That’s one point of emphasis for each of Brown’s touchdown catches in the first half. Hurts has developed into a genuine deep-ball threat and there’s no doubt his close relationship with Brown has played a part in the QB’s willingness to air it out. Hurts became the first Eagles QB to throw four 25-plus yard TD passes in a game since Norm Snead on Sept. 28, 1969 vs. Pittsburgh. Overall, he became the first NFL QB to accomplish the feat since Patrick Mahomes on Nov. 1, 2020 vs. the Jets.

Hurts has been thrilled that the Eagles are loaded with talented receivers that he can hit just about any time for a game-busting play.

“When I’m playing with them in the game I’m like, I got my popcorn ready after I throw them the ball,” he said. “I want to make sure I do my job to get them the ball and then I can be a fan and watch them go to work. I think that’s just a testament to them. I think for us, it looks differently by the day but we always prepare together and we always go onto the field and go into a game and try and be on the same page and I think that’s allowed us to be productive.”

WHAT NEEDS HELP

There are few knocks on the Eagles — did you hear they are undefeated? — but special teams continues to be a sore point. The Steelers picked up a first down on a fake punt and Philly’s return game has been a nonfactor.

STOCK UP

Much like Hurts does, let’s try and spread the ball around. Tight end Dallas Goedert caught six passes for 64 yards and is on pace for more than 1,000 yards receiving. He has yet to have a breakout game like the Eagles’ wide receivers but it’s hard not to feel like his time is coming. On the other side of the ball, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave had two sacks and forced a fumble that led to a touchdown.

STOCK DOWN

It’s hard to find a player or two doing much of anything wrong.

INJURED

First-round pick Jordan Davis left the game late in the first half with an ankle injury. The run-stopping defensive tackle was driven to the locker room on a cart.

KEY NUMBER

10 — Hurts has won 10 straight regular-season starts, the longest such streak in franchise history and the longest active streak in the NFL.

NEXT STEPS

All that’s missing in Houston is the Rocky statue to make all the fans that flocked to the city feel like they’re home. The Eagles play Thursday at Houston and the Phillies, their sports complex neighbors, could return Friday and Saturday for Games 6 and 7 of the World Series.

Philadelphia heads to MLS Cup final with 3-1 win over NYCFC

CHESTER, Pa. — Julian Carranza and Daniel Gazdag scored two minutes apart in the second half and the Philadelphia Union advanced to their first MLS Cup final with a 3-1 victory over New York City FC on Sunday night.

The Union will head to Los Angeles and face Supporters Shield winner LAFC in the league title match on Saturday.

LAFC advanced to its first MLS Cup championship game with a 3-0 victory over Austin FC in the Western Conference final earlier Sunday. The last Supporters Shield winner to reach the championship game was Toronto FC in 2017.

Cory Burke also scored for the Union, who were unbeaten in 19 matches at home this season.

It’s the first time since 2003 that the top seeds in each conference advanced to the final, and only the fourth time that two teams will make their first appearance in the championship.

“They’re a strong team, they’ve got great players. But we’ve given them a run for their money in some really, really good games against them, even in their building,» Union captain Alejandro Bedoya said of LAFC. “So it’s gonna be a tough game I think. Two different styles of play, coming in together to clash.”

Gazdag appeared to score for the Union in the 16th minute, but was offside. It was scoreless at the half before Maxi Moralez’s sublime strike that sailed past goalkeeper Andre Blake to put NYCFC in front 1-0 in the 57th minute.

The Union tied it up in the 65th with Carranza’s first career playoff goal. Moments later, Carranza directed a header to Gazdag, who scored to give Philadelphia the lead. Burke added a goal in the 76th.

“The players deserve all the accolades for how hard they pushed. We went down a goal, a really good transition goal from them, but our guys stuck with it and it’s a special time right now in Philadelphia for a lot of reasons, but these guys showed that they’re right up there with the Phillies, Eagles and all those other teams,» said Union coach Jim Curtin, who earned MLS Coach of the Year honors. «It’s great to see the sport grow this much in the city. I’m really proud.”

The Union saw the return of Bedoya, who was held out of the team’s conference semifinal victory over FC Cincinnati because of a nagging hip injury. But he was hobbling following the game.

NYCFC was hurt by the absence of defender Maxime Chanot because of a lower body injury. Talles Magno was also ruled out.

“Proud of the guys and how we grinded through the year. It wasn’t easy, we played a lot of games and had a lot of successes,” NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson said. “But ultimately disappointed to go out on this note.»

It was the second straight year the teams reached the Eastern Conference final. Last season, the Union were without 11 players because of COVID-19 protocols and NYCFC won 2-1.

New York City went on to defeat the Portland Timbers on a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw for the MLS Cup championship.

The Union swept NYCFC in two meetings this season for the first time, including a 2-0 victory in March for the team’s first win at Yankee stadium. Philadelphia also won 2-1 at home in June.

“I wouldn’t count us out against anybody,” Curtin said. “We kind of have a way of grinding and wearing down teams. That might not be the most fun to watch. But at the same time, it’s very effective and you can ask the other teams that play against us, it’s really hard to play against.»

World Series: 1-all, Phils, Phanatic see Astros on Halloween

No telling how well Philadelphia pitcher Noah Syndergaard will do in Game 3 of the World Series. Or whether Astros dynamo Jose Altuve will deliver another three hits.

But there will be one sure thing at Citizens Bank Park on Monday when the World Series resumes with the teams tied at 1-all: The Phillie Phanatic will put on quite a show on Halloween night.

The fuzzy, green Phillies mascot is always a fan favorite, and is set to entertain the crowd at the first World Series game in Philly since 2009.

After going 47-34 at the Bank this season — good, not great compared with several top teams — the Phillies became monster mashers at home in playoffs.

Philadelphia went 5-0 at home in eliminating defending World Series champion Atlanta and San Diego in the playoffs, outscoring them by a total of 35-15.

Syndergaard will start against Houston’s Lance McCullers Jr.

“I have not been shy as far as just being open to pitching on the road. I think it’s really cool to pitch on the road in the postseason. I think it’s when you get to experience the most raw and real atmospheres in all the game,” McCullers said.

WEATHER OR NOT

Showers are likely for Monday night, according to the National Weather Service, which estimated the chance of precipitation at 70%. The gametime temperature was forecast to be about 61 degrees.

In the 2008 World Series, Philadelphia had a 3-1 lead going into Game 5 at Citizens Bank Park. The Rays tied the score at 2 in the sixth inning on Oct. 27 when play was suspended with the Phillies about to bat. The game began in light rain, but showers turned to a steady downpour and the field became a quagmire.

The Rays had to relocate to a hotel in Delaware because their room block only was reserved through that afternoon. Rain and snow showers didn’t let up the next day and play resumed on Oct. 29 after a 46-hour suspension. “God Bless America” was sung rather than “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

With fans bundled in parkas and blankets, Jayson Werth hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth, Rocco Baldelli tied the score with a seventh-inning homer off Ryan Madson and Pedro Feliz hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. The Phillies held on to win 4-3 for their second Series title and first since 1980.

A PERFECT PLATE

Alex Bregman, Zack Wheeler and Yordan Alvarez were among those on the field who got attention in Game 2. Pat Hoberg wasn’t — and for an umpire, that’s always a good thing.

Hoberg called balls and strikes in Houston’s 5-2 win Saturday night and delivered a perfect plate performance, going 129 for 129 on taken pitches, according to the web site umpscorecards.com. The site tracks every pitch of the season and uses advanced methods to analyze them.

Hoberg is 36 and joined the full-time umpiring staff in 2017. It would usually take an ump much longer to get such a plumb World Series assignment, but he ranked as the best pitch caller in the majors this year among umps with at least 30 games behind the plate. Umpscorecards said he had a 95.4% accuracy rate going into his first World Series.

NOT RUBBED THE WRONG WAY

Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson says he isn’t concerned about Framber Valdez’s unusual hand rubbing during Game 2, downplaying speculation on social media that the left-hander was up to something fishy.

Major League Baseball on Sunday there was nothing to report, either.

Videos circulating on the internet showed Valdez repeatedly rubbing his left thumb across his right palm, then rubbing the ball between pitches. Valdez pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning of the Astros’ 5-2 victory, which evened the Series at a win each.

Thomson said Philadelphia’s dugout noticed what Valdez was doing but had no concern that he was adding a foreign substance to the ball.

“Yeah, we did… it’s all over Twitter,” he said. “The umpires check these guys after almost every inning, and if there’s something going on, MLB will take care of it.”

THERE HE IS

For the first time in a sluggish postseason, Jose Altuve looked like himself in Game 2 of the World Series.

Altuve led off the game with a rally-sparking double, singled in the fifth, then showed off his preternatural bat-to-ball skills in the seventh, slashing at a fastball thrown forehead-high for another single.

The last one had the 5-foot-6 sparkplug chuckling after reaching first base. Houston was happy to see that smile.

The 2017 AL MVP had been curiously quiet this month, opening the playoffs with a career-worst 0-for-25 slump and entering Game 2 a paltry 4 for 37 this postseason.

“Boy, it was great to see,” manager Dusty Baker said.

Biden y Blinken felicitan a Lula

Phillies set to host Houston with World Series tied at 1-all

PHILADELPHIA. — Fresh from singing another rollicking chorus of “Fly, Eagles fly,” fans streamed out of Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday and quickly turned their attention from the NFL’s only unbeaten club to another Philly team, another sport and another building just a few hundred yards away.

“Let’s go, Phillies!” some chanted in the concourse. “Let’s go, Harper!” other hollered as they headed to the exits.

Think that was loud? Just wait till the World Series returns to Philadelphia for the first time since 2009. On Halloween night, too, with the Phillie Phanatic sure to be in rare form.

Already frenzied during the NL playoffs, Citizens Bank Park figures to be positively pulsating for Game 3 on Monday night — providing the rain that’s in the forecast doesn’t dampen things.

Noah Syndergaard is set to start for the Phillies against Lance McCullers Jr. and the Houston Astros with the Series tied at one game each.

“Philly fans are the best, they know the game. They just have a way of showing displeasure that sometimes is hard for players to understand,” Mike Schmidt, the greatest Phillie of them all, said in an email to The Associated Press on Sunday.

That’s certainly one way of putting it, coming from a three-time NL MVP and first-ballot Hall of Famer who heard boos often enough at Veterans Stadium.

Schmidt is widely expected to be at the ballpark for the pregame festivities when the Series resumes after a travel day. And he’s certain to draw a standing ovation and hear loud cheers — indeed, the City of Brotherly Love is in love with all of its Phillies these days.

At their ballpark, a large World Series banner was in place. Across the street, a giant “Let’s Go Phillies!” sign was draped from the Eagles’ stadium before they routed the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-13 to improve to 7-0.

McCullers says he’s eager to hear and see the whole scene.

“I have not been shy as far as just being open to pitching on the road. I think it’s really cool to pitch on the road in the postseason. I think it’s when you get to experience the most raw and real atmospheres in all the game,” he said.

Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and the Phillies are all too eager to show the curveballing McCullers first-hand how quickly things can spin out of control in Philadelphia’s pinball machine.

After going 47-34 at the Bank this season — good, not great compared with several top teams — the Phillies have become monster mashers at home in playoffs.

Philadelphia went 5-0 at home in eliminating defending World Series champion Atlanta and San Diego in the playoffs, outscoring them by a total of 35-15.

Harper, Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins got the park bouncing with long balls. J.T. Realmuto thrilled a sellout crowd when his drive took a crazy carom off the oddly angled wall in center field, letting him become the first catcher in postseason history to hit an inside-the-park home run.

Philadelphia Flyers coach John Tortorella had just gotten out of his car at the adjacent Wells Fargo Center when the Phillies broke loose in a playoff game.

“It was shaking over where I was. That was pretty cool,” Tortorella said. “That’s what I love about being here.”

Syndergaard, who spent his first six seasons in the majors pitching for the NL East rival New York Mets, is glad he’ll be warming up for the home side.

“I never had the ability to play a playoff game wearing a Mets jersey in Citizens Bank Park,” he said. “But I’m more than happy and more relieved to be wearing a Phillies jersey down in that bullpen.”

“Because, I mean, those fans are on those guys from pitch one to the end of the game. And they’re an important part of this team and this organization as well,» he said.

Schmidt vividly recalled the Philly faithful heckling and taunting a Dodgers pitcher into a meltdown on the mound during the 1977 NLCS.

“They can affect what happens in the game, like the Burt Hooton debacle,” the former third baseman said. “They affect game momentum. I estimate an additional 20% advantage for home team in baseball.”

“They love when the players bring them into the game with emotion and acknowledgment,” he said.

Syndergaard, a fan favorite in New York with his flowing, blond hair that drew him the nickname “Thor,” has pitched three times in the postseason this year for a combined 5 1/3 innings. His last start came on Oct. 15 in the NL Division Series against Atlanta when he gave up one run in three innings.

Now, he’ll face Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and manager Dusty Baker’s Astros, who scored five runs each off Phillies aces Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler in splitting the first two games.

“Well, he hasn’t had a real start really since probably the middle of September, and probably his highest pitch count is like around 35 pitches,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said.

“I think that three-inning mark is — probably three, four innings, is probably where we’re at,” he said.

Thomson will also keep an eye on the weather.

“They want to make sure that there’s no delays, that they got enough time to get it in,” he said.

“If it’s really light and misty and it’s not going to get any heavier, they may start it. If it’s going to be moderate to heavy rain, they won’t start it,” he said.

Series saver Robertson gets 2nd Phils chance 3 years later

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson celebrates their win against the Houston Astros in Game 1 of baseball's World Series between the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, in Houston. PHILADELPHIA.— David Robertson walked off the mound after retiring Miami’s Miguel Rojas in April 2019. He wouldn’t throw another big league pitch for nearly 2 1/2 years.

He was a big bucks bust, his elbow shot less than a month into a $23 million, two-year contract with the Phillies. One surgery, a trip to Japan and three teams later, he’s wearing those high socks on a World Series mound, closing for Philadelphia at age 37.

“Very happy to end up back here in Philly,” he said. “I felt like my first go-around here did not work out well for me or the team. I blew out seven games in and was never able to really show what I could do or be able to help out the club.”

Robertson smiled as teammates filed by him to exchange hand slaps following Friday night’s opener. Robertson got the save for getting the final three outs in a 6-5, 10-inning win, retiring Aledmys Díaz on a game-ending groundout but only after allowing runners to reach second and third. He lived up to the “Houdini” nickname he earned with the New York Yankees, where he succeeded Mariano Rivera as closer.

“He had a tendency to get in trouble and then work his way out of it,” said Phillies manager Rob Thomson, a Yankees coach from 2008-17. “But that’s who he is. He’s got a really calm demeanor and a slow heartbeat and he conveys that throughout the bullpen, so he helps a lot of the younger guys. A lot of guys are going through troubles, he can help them through it.”

A Birmingham native who attended the University of Alabama, Robertson was drafted by the Yankees on the 17th round in the 2006 amateur draft and reached the big leagues two years later. He was a middle reliever during the 2009 title run, getting wins in the Division Series and League Championship Series and making a pair of scoreless appearances against the Phillies in the World Series as the Yankees won the title.

Robertson didn’t return to the Series until this year.

“I feel like a real part of the team,” he said. “In 2009, it was my second year in the league and there was so many superstars on that team that I just tried to kind of stay in the background and enjoy it, but I don’t remember as much of it.”

In his 14th big league season, Robertson has 57 wins and 157 saves. He became a late-inning reliever in 2011, earning his only All-Star trip, was promoted to primary setup man in 2012 and then closer when Rivera retired after the 2013 season. After one year in the role, Robertson left for a $46 million, four-year contract with the Chicago White Sox.

He was dealt back to the Yankees in July 2017. Even on a high-profile team, he was relatively anonymous away from the ballpark, riding the subway to Yankee Stadium wearing a hoodie.

When the contract expired, he became a free agent again and signed with the Phillies. Shut down 2 1/2 weeks into the season with what initially was diagnosed as a strained flexor tendon, Robertson had surgery Aug. 15 with Dr. James Andrews.

“I definitely had a rough road coming back from that injury. I had a little bit more complicated than just the Tommy John. I had flexor repair, as well,” Robertson said. “So my timeline was a lot longer than most people. And I was 34 years old when I had surgery, so it took me a little bit of time to get back. In my mind that wasn’t done, I just needed it that amount of time to get my elbow right to be able to pitch.”

He spent much of 2020 rehabbing, and was shut down after a setback in August. His Phillies contract over, he promised USA Baseball executive director Paul Seiler he would play for the U.S. Olympic team under Mike Scioscia. Robertson had two saves as the Americans won the silver medal.

“It was so hot over there. And even coming from Alabama, the humidity over there was something I hadn’t experienced in a long time,” Robertson said. “You’re playing in 100 degrees with 100% humidity on AstroTurf, and the game was so fast. They had it sped up faster than anything I’ve ever seen. And no fans in the seats, so you could hear everything.”

He signed with Tampa Bay a little more than a week after the Olympics, pitched six times for Triple-A Durham and was back in the majors on Sept. 1, 2021. He pitched 12 regular-season games and three in the Division Series. Then in January, he reached a $3.5 million, one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs that would earn him another $1.6 million in bonuses.

Batters had just one hit in their first 34 at-bats against him this season. With Chicago out of contention, the Phillies acquired him at the trade deadline on Aug. 2 for minor league right-hander Ben Brown.

“He was one of the best relief pitchers in the game of baseball at that point,” Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said. “He’s pitched in big moments in a big market. So we thought if we were going to acquire somebody that can pitch at the back end of the game, he’d feel very comfortable to do that.”

Robertson had six saves in nine chances with a 2.70 ERA for the Phillies and finished the season with 20 saves in 28 chances and a .173 opponents’ batting average along with a 2.40 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He averaged 93 mph with his cutter, close to his pre-surgery peak.

Then he opened the playoffs by getting the win with a perfect eighth inning against St. Louis in the Wild Card Series opener. He missed the Division Series after hurting his right calf while jumping to celebrate Bryce Harper’s home run in the clinching win over the Cardinals.

It took 13 years for Robertson to make it back to baseball’s biggest stage, and he’s enjoying the moment.

“Pretty good adrenaline rush there,” he said the day after getting the Series save. “It turned into a tough inning there, but it always is tough to get those final three outs.”

A Marino “empezamos a buscarlo esa misma noche”, explica Raiza.
