Al menos dos congresistas demócratas han marcado distancias en las últimas horas de la postura oficial de su partido para expresar apoyo a Palestina y criticar la ocupación israelí, motivo por el que han recibido críticas de sus propias filas.
Los pronunciamientos tuvieron lugar tras el ataque sin precedentes de Hamás contra Israel el sábado, que ha derivado en una nueva guerra con Gaza en la que han fallecido ya más de mil personas, entre israelíes y palestinos.
La congresista Rashida Tlaib, de origen palestino, lamentó en un comunicado «la pérdida de vidas palestinas e israelíes», al tiempo que pidió levantar el bloqueo de Gaza, acabar con la ocupación y «desmantelar el sistema de apartheid».
«Este ciclo de violencia desgarrador no parará mientras nuestro país siga suministrando miles de millones en apoyo financiero incondicional para el Gobierno de apartheid», opinó la legisladora.
Tlaib, representante demócrata por Míchigan, es una de las voces más reconocidas a favor de la causa palestina en el Congreso de Estados Unidos, donde históricamente ha existido un consenso casi total en la defensa férrea de Israel.
En julio, votó en contra de una resolución de la Cámara que niega la existencia de un «apartheid» contra los palestinos en Israel, y que fue aprobada con motivo de la visita del presidente israelí, Isaac Herzog, a Estados Unidos.
Otra congresista demócrata, Cori Bush, de Misuri, condenó las muertes de civiles en ambos bandos en un comunicado en el que también advirtió de que la respuesta militar de Israel «exacerbará el sufrimiento de los palestinos» y exigió al Gobierno estadounidense que deje de apoyar a «la ocupación militar israelí».
En un mensaje citado por medios locales, los congresistas demócratas Ritchie Torres y Josh Gottheimer condenaron la postura de sus compañeras y defendieron que el apoyo a Israel debe ser «incondicional», tal y como lo ha dicho el presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden.
«Dos de mis colegas pidieron a Estados Unidos poner fin a la asistencia a Israel, a pesar de las innumerables imágenes de niños, mujeres, hombres y ancianos israelíes y estadounidenses asesinados por terroristas radicales de Hamás, respaldados por Irán», declaró Gottheimer.
También el embajador israelí en Estados Unidos, Michael Herzog, se sumó a las críticas en redes sociales y recordó que «cientos de civiles israelíes inocentes fueron masacrados a sangre fría en un día santo».
«¿Cuánta sangre más necesita derramarse para que usted supere sus prejuicios y condene inequívocamente a Hamás, una organización terrorista designada por Estados Unidos?», le dijo Herzog a Tlaib.

PHILADELPHIA. — Republicans attacked Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Monday as the longtime environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine activist launched an independent bid for the White House, reflecting growing concerns on the right that the former Democrat now threatens to take votes from former President Donald Trump in 2024.
The Republican National Committee and Trump’s campaign both took aim at Kennedy’s liberal background while national Democrats stayed silent as Kennedy insisted in a speech in Philadelphia that he was leaving both political parties behind.
“Voters should not be deceived by anyone who pretends to have conservative values,” said Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung in a statement. He labeled Kennedy’s campaign “nothing more than a vanity project for a liberal Kennedy looking to cash in on his family’s name.”
The fiery response exposes the unknowns that lie in Kennedy’s long-anticipated decision to run as an independent. The move is likely to impact the 2024 race, which appears to be heading toward a rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden, but it’s still unclear exactly how.
Kennedy, a member of one of the most famous families in Democratic politics, was running a long-shot primary bid and holds better favorability ratings among Republicans than Democrats. Even Trump just two weeks ago said of Kennedy, “I like him a lot. I’ve known him for a long time.”
Allies of both Biden and Trump have at times questioned whether Kennedy would be a spoiler against their candidate.
“The truth is, they’re both right,” Kennedy said onstage Monday to roaring applause. “My intention is to spoil it for both of them.”
Speaking Monday from Philadelphia’s Independence Mall, where America’s founding documents were adopted, Kennedy made it clear he didn’t want to be affiliated with either party. He referenced a “rising tide of discontent” in the country. He said he wants to make a “new declaration of independence” — from corporations, the media and the two major political parties.
Hundreds of supporters who gathered for Kennedy’s remarks, holding signs that read “Declare your independence” and at times chanting “RFK, all the way!” were upbeat about his decision. An eclectic mix of disillusioned Democrats, Trump voters looking for a change, and political outsiders who say their ideas don’t square with any one party, they insisted that Kennedy could unify them all.

“He’s going to win,” said Peter Pantazis, a 40-year-old business owner from Lewes, Delaware. “I’ve been praying that he’s going to decentralize the campaign, get away from the party system and actually be the candidate of the people for the people. And that’s what he announced today.”
“The last couple years I’ve been noticing the Republican Party’s been going a way I didn’t like,” said Brent Snyder, a disabled veteran from south Philadelphia. “Not that I agree with everything that’s happening to Trump, but I think right now he has more baggage than his country needs. The division right now is just terrible. We need someone to bring both sides together to make us work.”
Joy, hope and the faint smell of marijuana hovered above the crowd as Kennedy spoke of John Adams’ unwavering support for his country and George Washington’s prescient warning that partisan politics would result in corruption.
Yet Kennedy’s upstart campaign has a long way to go to compete with the funding, support and experience that the Trump and Biden campaigns enjoy. His announcement Monday was delayed briefly when he arrived onstage only to find his speech hadn’t been loaded onto the teleprompter.

Monday’s announcement comes less than a week after the progressive activist Cornel West abandoned his Green Party bid in favor of an independent White House run. Meanwhile, the centrist group No Labels is actively securing ballot access for a yet-to-be-named candidate.
Aware of the risk that Kennedy could pull votes away from Republicans, Trump allies have begun circulating opposition research against Kennedy designed to damage his standing among would-be conservative supporters.
The Republican National Committee published a fact sheet before Kennedy’s speech titled “Radical DEMOCRAT RFK Jr.” that lists times he supported liberal politicians or ideas. The document also listed times he supported conspiracy theories about COVID-19 or “stolen-election claims” related to the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections that Democrats lost to President George W. Bush. Trump continues to promote the disproved theory that his loss to Biden was the result of a stolen election.
Biden’s allies so far have dismissed Kennedy’s primary campaign as unserious. Asked for comment ahead of the announcement, a Democratic National Committee spokesman responded with an eye roll emoji. The DNC declined to comment Monday.
Four of Kennedy’s eight surviving siblings put out a joint statement denouncing his candidacy and saying his announcement saddened them.
“The decision of our brother Bobby to run as a third party candidate against Joe Biden is dangerous to our country,” it read. “Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment.”
Tony Lyons, co-founder and co-chairman of American Values 2024, the super PAC supporting Kennedy, dismissed those comments as “part of a strategy to discredit him.”
“At his family dinner tables they would disagree about everything, and that’s what democracy looks like,» Lyons said. “Families are allowed to disagree.”

While Kennedy has long identified as a Democrat and frequently invokes his late father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and his uncle President John F. Kennedy on the campaign trail, he has built close relationships with far-right figures in recent years. He appeared on a channel run by the Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and headlined a stop on the ReAwaken America Tour, the Christian nationalist road show put together by Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
Polls show far more Republicans than Democrats have a favorable opinion of Kennedy. He also has gained support from some far-right conservatives for his fringe views, including his vocal distrust of COVID-19 vaccines, which studies have shown are safe and effective against severe disease and death.
Kennedy’s anti-vaccine organization, Children’s Health Defense, currently has a lawsuit pending against a number of news organizations, among them The Associated Press, accusing them of violating antitrust laws by taking action to identify misinformation, including about COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccines. Kennedy took leave from the group when he announced his run for president but is listed as one of its attorneys in the lawsuit.

PHILADELPHIA.— Jalen Hurts had been more grounded this season than he was a year ago, when he was an explosive runner in a breakout season that saw him lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl.
The big plays will come, he insisted.
Hurts finally broke free Sunday in a win against the Rams.
The Eagles led by three in the third quarter when they faced third-and-7 in their own territory. Maybe the Rams would have one more scoring drive in them should they stop the Eagles and force a punt.
Hurts instead dropped back, faced pressure and took off toward his right sideline and beat two defenders before bruising his way for a few more yards. Hurts got 17 yards on the run that kept the drive alive and ended with a field goal.
That was the Hurts the Eagles had waited for this season.
“There’s gonna be games he has to get freaky out there,” coach Nick Sirianni said. “I thought he did a really nice job of making some plays that only he can make.”
Hurts passed for 303 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 72 yards and another score in the 23-14 win over the Rams. His 15 rushing attempts were a season best, as were the yards.
Hurts easily had his best all-around game of the season, one reason the Eagles are 5-0 for only the fourth time in franchise history. The last time? Yes, last season behind Hurts, who was the NFL MVP runner-up. (Philly also started 5-0 in 1981 and 2004.)
He was clutch on third down. Hurts had eight carries for 45 yards on third down and was 6 of 8 for 67 yards with one passing TD on third down.
“This is a results-based business,” Hurts said. “You’re judged on what you do and the outcome of what you do. Nobody really cares about how you do it. They want to see if you win or you lose; if it works or if it doesn’t.”
Most parts of the game are working for the Eagles and in a “results-based business,” only San Francisco (5-0) can match them as the best in the NFL.
WHAT’S WORKING
The Eagles are feeling sack-happy again this season.
Haason Reddick had back-to-back sacks on third and fourth down in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles possession on the Rams 28-yard line with 2:50 remaining.
Rookie Jalen Carter had two sacks and became the third Eagles player to have 3 1/2 total sacks in his first five games, joining Corey Simon (4 in 2000) and Reggie White (4 1/2 in 1985).
WHAT NEEDS HELP
Call it the “tush push,” the «Brotherly Shove” or whatever the secret name really is, the play works: Hurts scored a touchdown on the Eagles’ signature short-yardage play.
But what about when the play isn’t called? The Eagles were only 2 of 6 inside the 20, one reason why Jake Elliott kicked three field goals against the Rams.
The Eagles totaled 454 yards but failed to score at least 25 points for the first time this season. It’s hard to complain when their record is 5-0. But at some point, the Eagles could find an expected win turn into a loss because of their failure to finish drives with a TD. Still, the Eagles had 415-plus total yards in four consecutive games for the fifth time in team history (1953, 2011, 2013 and 2022).
STOCK UP
Welcome back, Dallas Goedert.
The tight end hadn’t had his number called for much of the season and seemingly was lost in the shuffle while Brown and Smith had all the 100-yard receiving games.
Against the Rams, Goedert broke through. He finished with a season-high 117 receiving yards and a touchdown. He also had a 49-yard reception in the third quarter, the longest of Goedert’s career.

Sideline spats.
Yes, sideline arguments are part of the game, but the Eagles have had unusually high instances of bickering between plays this season.
Sirianni chewed out Hurts after an interception and wide receiver Quez Watkins after a failed screen on Sunday. Eagles center Jason Kelce had animated conversations with Sirianni and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.
“I’m not going to get into it,» Kelce said. “I think that I love everybody in this building like a family, I’ve been here a very long time. I think I just got a little bit too heated. The red zone has been frustrating I think for everybody. We’ve left a lot of points on the board. And I let myself get too frustrated, too animated. And it wasn’t productive.»
Sirianni brushed off the heated exchanges, saying: “This is the way football is. There’s a lot of emotions in it.”

11 — Bad news this week for the Eagles’ next opponent, the Jets? Hurts has won a team-record 11 consecutive road starts since 2021, the third-longest streak by an NFL QB since the 1970 merger. Only Joe Montana (18) and Tom Brady (13) had longer streaks. Patrick Mahomes also won 11 straight road games over the 2019-2020 seasons.

Al menos cuatro argentinos murieron y trece latinoamericanos más permanecen desaparecidos tras el ataque de Hamas a Israel, anunciaron distintos gobiernos de la región, los cuales aseguraron que mantienen conversaciones con las autoridades israelíes y palestinas para tratar de localizar a sus connacionales.
Hasta ahora, las distintas autoridades han dicho que están desaparecidos tres mexicanos, tres brasileños, dos argentinos, dos peruanos, dos colombianos y una chilena.
El conflicto que ha dejado más de 1.000 muertos en ambos bandos ha generado diferentes reacciones entre los gobiernos de Latinoamérica, que desde el fin de semana han expresado preocupación por los ataques sufridos por Israel y han hecho llamados para buscar una salida pacífica a la crisis.
“No queremos la guerra. No queremos la confrontación. No queremos la violencia”, dijo el lunes el presidente mexicano Andrés Manuel López Obrador al hacer un llamado a Naciones Unidas a que convoque una reunión de urgencia para aprobar una resolución que ayude a promover un “diálogo de inmediato”, y que no se dependa sólo del Consejo de Seguridad.
México anunció que enviará dos aviones del ejército a Israel para buscar a cientos de mexicanos que se encuentran varados en Israel.
Durante su conferencia matutina, López Obrador confirmó que tres mexicanos permanecen desaparecidos luego de los ataques de Hamas a Israel. El mandatario dijo que autoridades mexicanas están en contacto con los familiares de los desaparecidos y con diplomáticos de Israel y Palestina, que ya habrían iniciado las labores de búsqueda.
La secretaria de Relaciones Exteriores de México, Alicia Bárcena, informó el domingo que un hombre y una mujer fueron tomados como rehenes por Hamas y que habrían sido llevados cerca de la Franja de Gaza.
Aunque las autoridades no revelaron los nombres, familiares y amigos identificaron a los mexicanos desaparecidos como Ilana Gritzewsky Camhi y Orión Hernández Padoux, quienes se encontraban en el festival musical donde Hamas realizó el ataque a Israel.
El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Brasil señaló el domingo en un comunicado que tres brasileños que asistieron a un festival musical en el sur de Israel se encuentran actualmente desaparecidos. Todos ellos tienen doble nacionalidad brasileña e israelí, indicó la Cancillería, pero no facilitó sus nombres.
Desde Israel, el argentino Itzik Horn, padre de Iair y Eitan, desaparecidos en el ataque de Hamas, declaró a una emisora de Buenos Aires que sus hijos están desaparecidos. «No están en los hospitales, pero por suerte por ahora no están en la lista de muertos. La conclusión es que se los llevaron a Gaza”.
El hombre perdió contacto con sus hijos cuando estaban en un kibutz cercano a la Franja de Gaza.
La cancillería argentina no ha suministrado datos sobre el posible paradero de los hermanos. Por otro lado, informó que el consulado argentino en Tel Aviv está elaborando un registro de los argentinos que se encuentren en territorio israelí y puedan llegar a requerir una evacuación.
Además, recomendó que todos los nacionales que tengan pasajes aéreos, o que puedan comprarlos, aborden cuanto antes los vuelos comerciales disponibles desde el Aeropuerto Ben-Gurion, “que continúa operando”.
La decisión de la Cancillería se produjo poco después de confirmarse el fallecimiento de cuatro argentinos en suelo israelí: Silvia Mirensky, que vivía en una granja colectiva, Rodolfo Fabián Skariszewski, Abi Korin y Ronit Rudman.
La cancillería de Perú anunció que dos peruanos han sido reportados como desaparecidos. Uno de ellos fue identificado como Daniel Levi Ludmir, un médico que se encontraba en el kibutz de Be’eri, un lugar cercano a la Franja de Gaza. La comunidad peruana en Israel está compuesta por alrededor de 4.000 personas, según cifras oficiales.
Por su parte, el gobierno español confirmó la desaparición de dos españoles, uno de ellos casado con una chilena, de quien tampoco se sabe su paradero. La cancillería de Chile confirmó que no hay noticias de la mujer, que vivía cerca de Gaza y que no fue identificada.
En tanto, la cancillería colombiana informó que intenta ubicar a dos jóvenes que se encontraban en un festival cerca de la frontera entre Gaza e Israel. Los jóvenes se llaman Antonio Macias Montano e Ivonne Rubio, según indicaron sus familiares.

Kennedy Jr. is expected to announce Monday that he will drop his Democratic bid for president and run as an independent or third-party candidate, adding a new wrinkle to a 2024 race currently heading toward a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
Kennedy’s campaign has teased the announcement in the days leading up to a Monday afternoon speech in Philadelphia. In a recent video, Kennedy said there is corruption “in the leadership of both political parties” and said he wants to “rewrite the assumptions and change the habits of American politics.”
The video came shortly after Mediaite reported he planned to launch an independent bid.

JERUSALÉN. — El ejército prometió el lunes plantar un asedio total a la Franja de Gaza, mientras sus militares buscaban milicianos en el sur, vigilaban brechas en la cerca fronteriza y bombardeaban el territorio gobernado por Hamas tras una incursión sin precedentes el fin de semana.
Más de dos días después de que Hamas lanzara su ataque sorpresa desde Gaza, el ejército dijo que los combates prácticamente habían terminado por el momento. El asalto tomó completamente por sorpresa al prestigioso aparato militar y de inteligencia israelí, lo que llevó intensos combates a sus calles por primera vez en décadas.
Israel declaró oficialmente la guerra el domingo, lo que presagiaba más combates por venir y una posible ofensiva por tierra en Gaza, algo que en el pasado ha incrementado el número de bajas. Los civiles ya habían pagado un alto precio. Al menos 700 personas murieron en Israel, una enorme cifra que no se había visto en el país en varias décadas. Casi 500 personas habían muerto en Gaza, un enclave con 2,3 millones de habitantes que limita con Israel y Egipto.
Grupos armados palestinos dijeron tener unos 130 rehenes del lado israelí. El brazo armado de Hamas afirmó en su canal de Telegram que cuatro de ellos habían muerto en ataques aéreos israelíes. No fue posible verificar de forma independiente esa afirmación, que mostraba el dilema para el gobierno israelí al bombardear un territorio donde estaba retenidos algunos de sus ciudadanos.
En un esfuerzo de aumentar la presión sobre Hamas, el ministro israelí de Defensa, Yoav Gallant, ordenó un “asedio total” sobre Gaza y dijo que las autoridades cortarían la electricidad e impedirían la entrada de alimentos y combustible. Tras unas 48 horas de enconadas batallas dentro de Israel, el principal vocero del ejército, el contraalmirante Daniel Hagari, dijo a la prensa que Israel tenía el “control” de sus poblaciones fronterizas. El lunes de madrugada se habían producido algunos incidentes aislados, señaló, pero no había combates en marcha.
Sin embargo, advirtió que aún podría haber milicianos en la zona.
Se habían evacuado 15 de 24 poblaciones fronterizas, apuntó y se esperaba desalojar el resto en las 24 horas siguientes.
Antes, el vocero de Hamas Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua dijo a The Associated Press por teléfono que los combatientes del grupo seguían peleando fuera de Gaza y que habían capturado más israelíes el lunes por la mañana.
El grupo, señaló, aspira a liberar a todos los prisioneros israelíes retenidos por Israel, que en el pasado ha aceptado doloroso acuerdos muy dispares en los que liberaba a un gran número de prisioneros a cambio de cautivos individuales o incluso los restos de soldados fallecidos.

Se sabía que entre los rehenes capturados por Hamas y el grupo más pequeño Yihad Islámica había soldados y civiles, incluidos mujeres, niños y ancianos, en su mayoría israelíes pero también algunos de otras nacionalidades. El ejército israelí sólo dijo que el número de personas capturadas era “significativo”.
Mayyan Zin, una madre divorciada, supo que sus dos hijas habían sido secuestradas después de que un familiar le envió fotografías de un grupo de Telegram en el que se las veía retenidas y sentadas en un colchón. Luego encontró videos en internet que mostraban a hombres armados en la casa de su exesposo, a sus dos hijas —de 8 y 15 años— y al padre de las niñas.
En sus ataques aéreos, Israel dijo haber arrasado buena parte de la población de Beit Hanoun, en la esquina noreste del enclave que según Hagari empleaba Hamas para lanzar ataques. En un primer momento no había información sobre el número de víctimas, y la mayor parte de los miles de habitantes del lugar probablemente huyeron antes del bombardeo.
Hagari dijo que el ejército había llamado a unos 300.000 reservistas, una enorme movilización.
El vocero reiteró que el objetivo era diezmar las capacidades militares y de gobierno de Hamas. El grupo administra Gaza desde que expulsó a las fuerzas leales a la Autoridad Palestina, que cuenta con reconocimiento internacional, en 2007, y su gobierno no ha enfrentado desafíos en 16 años de bloqueo israelí y egipcio y las cuatro guerras previas con Israel.

En la ciudad palestina de Rafah, en el sur de Gaza, un ataque aéreo israelí mató el lunes de madrugada a 19 personas, incluidas mujeres y niños, dijo Talat Barhoum, médico en el hospital local de Al-Najjar. Philadelphia went 74 yards in 30 seconds and lined up at the Rams 1 for one final snap before halftime. Just about everybody in SoFi Stadium knew that last play would be the “tush push,” the “Brotherly Shove,» or whatever Jalen Hurts’ secret name is for the Eagles’ signature short-yardage surge.
That’s what it’s like facing the powerhouse Eagles these days: They don’t always execute perfectly, but they just keep moving forward.
Hurts passed for 303 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 72 yards and another score, and Philadelphia outlasted the Rams 23-14 on Sunday to remain unbeaten.
Dallas Goedert had eight catches for 117 yards and an early TD for the Eagles, who are off to consecutive 5-0 starts for the first time in franchise history despite never pulling away in this meeting of the last two NFC champions. Philadelphia has won 22 of its last 23 regular-season games.
“It’s tough to win in this league, so we’re really happy with where we’re at,” Goedert said. “We do have stuff we need to clean up, but it’s a good start for us.”
A.J. Brown had six catches for 127 yards, but the Eagles couldn’t reach the end zone in the second half and had to rely on their defense, which shut out the Rams (2-3) after halftime. Hurts’ surge into the end zone at the halftime gun was the game’s final touchdown, but that was enough for Philadelphia.
“Not to pour more water into that jug, but it’s something we’ve been able to do at a high level,” Hurts said of the signature play, which he calls by a name he wouldn’t disclose. “It’s clear that it doesn’t always work for everyone else, so we just want to continue to execute whenever it’s called. … We just want to continue to grow. It’s truly about growing.”
The Eagles earned another road victory punctuated by another set of successful tush pushes, but they’ll also lament missed opportunities. They racked up 454 total yards but failed to score at least 25 points for the first time this season.
Philadelphia went 13 for 18 on third downs after struggling in that area last week. Still, the Eagles settled for short field goals by Jake Elliott after drives lasting 17 plays, 15 plays and 10 plays.
The Philly defense covered for the offense’s shortcomings, with Eagles rookie Jalen Carter picking up two sacks in the stadium where he won a national title with Georgia nine months ago. Haason Reddick also had two sacks.
“At the start of the game, they were getting the ball out to their receivers really quick,” Carter said. “We knew we had to get to (Matthew Stafford) faster, and we did that … and it changed the game.”
Cooper Kupp had eight catches for 118 yards in the former Super Bowl MVP’s dynamic season debut for the Rams, who have lost three of four despite hanging in with three probable Super Bowl contenders during that stretch. Kupp made five catches for 56 yards on Los Angeles’ opening drive, but the offense only made one more TD march.
Stafford passed for 222 yards and hit Tutu Atwell and rookie Puka Nacua for touchdowns, but Los Angeles’ offense didn’t cross midfield in the second half. Nacua finished with seven catches for a career-low 71 yards.
After coming off injured reserve this week, Kupp made a remarkable return to the NFL in the first game since November 2022 for the 2021 Offensive Player of the Year. Kupp missed the final eight games of last season with an ankle injury before getting sidelined early in this year’s training camp with a hamstring injury.
“There’s a few things that I’m sure I’m gonna look at tomorrow and just feel like, ‘Man, just didn’t happen a little bit faster,’” Kupp said. “But it did feel good to be out there playing football again.”
Goedert caught a 6-yard scoring pass to cap Philadelphia’s opening drive, but the Rams responded with a 14-play march that included six targets of Kupp before Atwell’s TD catch.
Los Angeles went up 14-10 with 32 seconds left in the first half with a drive including two exceptional throws by Stafford, who hit Kupp for a 39-yard gain before finding Nacua in the corner for a 22-yard TD.
But Hurts still scored after the Eagles got major help from Rams cornerback Derion Kendrick, who committed 28 yards in penalties while trying to defend Brown.
LA’s Ahkello Witherspoon made an impressive end-zone interception in the third quarter to keep the Eagles from pulling away, but the Rams’ offense couldn’t capitalize on any opportunity.
“I think we’re too talented of a group to keep losing these types of games, coming up close against good opponents,” Witherspoon said. “It’s time to start cashing in on W’s, and I think we have the group that can do it.”

TRES HOMBRES BRITÁNICOS ESTÁN MUERTOS O DESAPARECIDOS, SEGÚN FAMILIARES
Tres hombres británicos presuntamente están muertos o desaparecidos después del ataque de Hamas a Israel.
Nathanel Young, de 20 años, murió mientras colaboraba con las Fuerzas de Defensa de Israel, publicó en Facebook su hermana Gaby Shalev. Su muerte después la confirmó la embajada israelí en Londres.
No se tienen noticias del fotógrafo británico Danny Darlington, quien vivía en Berlín, y su novia alemana Carolin Bohl, después de ocultarse en un búnker en el kibutz Nir Oz, según Sam Pasquesi, cuñado de Bohl.
Pasquesi dijo que un hombre que trabajaba en el kibutz le dijo el domingo a su familia que los cadáveres de ambos fueron identificados.

ISRAEL CONFIRMA QUE HAY ESTADOUNIDENSES ENTRE LOS CAPTIVOS DE HAMAS
El ministro de asuntos estratégicos de Israel, Ron Dermer, dijo que hay ciudadanos estadounidenses entre los que fueron tomados cautivos, pero no dio detalles sobre ellos ni sobre los estadounidenses que pudieron haber muerto.
“Desafortunadamente no puedo. Tenemos muchas dobles nacionalidades en Israel. Sospecho que hay varios, pero todavía intentamos ordenar toda esta información tras este terrible ataque sorpresivo y nos aseguraremos de dar a conocer esa información para que los seres queridos de estas personas que murieron y están secuestradas, sepan lo más pronto posible”, dijo Dermer en el programa “State of the Union” de la CNN.
EE. UU. SOPESA ENVIAR MÁS AYUDA A ISRAEL, AFIRMA BLINKEN
El secretario de Estado de Estados Unidos, Antony Blinken, dijo que su país está analizando solicitudes adicionales de asistencia que han hecho los israelíes y que podría haber novedades en ese frente más tarde el domingo.
Le dijo a CNN que la “orden del presidente Joe Biden era asegurarnos de que le estamos proporcionando a Israel todo lo que necesita en este momento para hacer frente a los ataques de Hamas”.
Blinken, quien concedió entrevistas a varios programas de noticias de la televisión estadounidense el domingo, también habló de cómo el ataque de Hamas podría haber sido motivado en parte para descarrilar un acuerdo diplomático emergente entre Israel y Arabia Saudí.

Agregó que Washington había visto informes de que estadounidenses estaban desaparecidos o habían sido asesinados y “estamos trabajando horas extras para verificarlo”.
CANCILLER ALEMÁN ADVIERTE SOBRE RIESGOS DE ESCALADA REGIONAL
El canciller alemán OIaf Scholz enfatizó la necesidad de evitar una mayor “conflagración” en Medio Oriente luego del ataque de Hamas a Israel.
Scholz dijo que habló el domingo con el primer ministro israelí Benjamin Netanyahu y le indicó que la seguridad de Israel es una piedra angular de la política alemana. Prometió actuar “en consecuencia” y añadió que planea hablar con el presidente egipcio Abdul Fatá El Sisi y apoyará a Egipto en sus esfuerzos por mediar y reducir la tensión.
Scholz dijo que también hablará por teléfono con los mandatarios de Estados Unidos, Francia y el Reino Unido para evaluar la situación.

GABINETE DE SEGURIDAD ISRAELÍ DECLARA QUE EL PAÍS ESTÁ EN GUERRA
La oficina del primer ministro israelí Benjamín Netanyahu señaló que su Gabinete de Seguridad declaró al país en guerra luego del ataque mortal de Hamas en el sur de Israel.
La decisión, anunciada el domingo, autoriza formalmente “la adopción de importantes medidas militares”, según un comunicado.
“La guerra que fue impuesta al Estado de Israel en un asesino ataque terrorista desde la Franja de Gaza comenzó ayer a las 06:00″, dijo.
No dio más detalles. Pero Netanyahu había declarado previamente al país en guerra y el ejército prometió una dura respuesta en Gaza.
FUNCIONARIOS IRANÍES ELOGIAN ATAQUE DE HAMAS
Ali Shamkhani, asesor político del líder supremo de Irán, dijo en una publicación en X que el ataque de Hamas fue “una operación decisiva, única y efectiva” que constituyó una defensa legítima contra el gobierno israelí.
“La resistencia palestina es un movimiento maduro e independiente cuyo poder proviene del amplio apoyo público”, añadió.
POBLACIÓN PALESTINA BUSCA REFUGIO EN ESCUELAS
La agencia de la ONU para los Refugiados Palestinos, UNRWA, indicó que más de 20.000 personas hallaron refugio en 44 de sus escuelas en Gaza el sábado por la noche.
“El número (de desplazados) está aumentando rápidamente”, dijo Inas Hamdan, funcionario interino de información pública en Gaza.
La agencia señaló que tres de sus escuelas sufrieron daños “colaterales” por los ataques aéreos israelíes y agregó dijo que sus operaciones en nueve pozos de agua alrededor de la Franja de Gaza fueron detenidas la madrugada del sábado. Las operaciones en tres pozos se reanudaron el domingo, de acuerdo con Hamdan. Los centros de distribución de alimentos de la agencia, que sirven a más de 540.000 residentes de Gaza, han estado cerrados desde el sábado.
En una escuela de la UNRWA en el barrio de Sheikh Radwan, al noroeste del centro de la ciudad de Gaza, los residentes describieron los ataques israelíes nocturnos que impactaron el patio de la escuela causando pánico y heridas leves entre quienes se refugiaban allí.
En otra escuela que servía de refugio en el centro de la ciudad de Gaza, la gente amontonaba mantas y comida en el edificio de tres pisos. Los recién llegados trajeron colchones y metieron a sus hijos en aulas pequeñas y abarrotadas.
MANDATARIOS DE EGIPTO Y JORDANIA DISCUTEN LA CRISIS
Los mandatarios de Egipto y Jordania, países vecinos de Israel, discutieron los combates en curso entre Israel y palestinos.
Según un comunicado del presidente egipcio Abdul Fatá El Sisi, el mandatario recibió una llamada telefónica del rey Abdullah II de Jordania.
Ambos acordaron trabajar para evitar un mayor deterioro de la situación, se lee en el comunicado.
Tanto Egipto como Jordania son aliados cercanos de Estados Unidos y son las primeras naciones árabes en establecer relaciones diplomáticas con Israel.
La más reciente ronda de violencia comenzó con un sorpresivo ataque sin precedentes en que militantes de Hamas irrumpieron en Israel, mataron a cientos de personas y llevaron rehenes de regreso a Gaza.
Israel respondió enviando tropas a la franja fronteriza y lanzando ataques aéreos contra el territorio bloqueado.
SE REGISTRAN EXPLOSIONES Y ATAQUES AÉREOS EN RAFAH
Residentes de la ciudad de Rafah, en el sur de Gaza, escucharon el domingo una fuerte explosión, aparentemente proveniente de un ataque aéreo israelí que impactó un objetivo cerca de las fronteras con Egipto. De momento se desconoce cuál era el blanco. Los habitantes dijeron que una casa de la zona había sido evacuada.
Israel llevó a cabo docenas de ataques aéreos en Rafah durante la noche. Uno de los ataques dio en tres viviendas en uno de los campos de refugiados más poblados, Shaboura, y mató a 19 miembros de una sola familia, según un integrante de la familia que publicó sus nombres en redes sociales.
También el domingo, los altavoces de las mezquitas y los autos en marcha en Rafah resonaron con condolencias y elogios para los combatientes de Hamas, que se cree que eran nativos de Rafah, que murieron durante el ataque a Israel.

BLOQUE ISLÁMICO CONDENA LA “AGRESIÓN MILITAR ISRAELÍ”
El bloque de países musulmanes más grande del mundo condenó lo que denomina “agresión militar israelí” en medio de los combates en curso entre Israel y el grupo insurgente palestino Hamas.
La Organización de Cooperación Islámica, con sede en Arabia Saudí, se dijo el domingo “muy preocupada por los acontecimientos y la peligrosa escalada israelí en el territorio palestino ocupado”.
El bloque de 57 miembros condenó “la agresión militar israelí que provocó la caída de cientos de mártires y heridos entre el pueblo palestino”.

One person was killed and eight were wounded in a shooting during a private party at a Pennsylvania community center early Sunday, authorities said.
State police in Indiana County said troopers, local officers and emergency services responded at 12:35 a.m. Sunday to the shooting at the Chevy Chase Community Center in White Township, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh.
Nine people between the ages of 18 and 23 were shot, including a 22-year-old Pittsburgh man who died at the scene, police said. Lt. Col. George Bivens said investigators believe more than one shooter was involved but declined to say how many there were.
“Dozens of gunshots were fired within the confines of the building,» said Bivens, acknowledging later that “It may well be that we had a gunfight inside this building.» Many fired shell casings and “multiple firearms” had been recovered, along with other evidence such as clothing and cellphones, he said.
Bivens said, however, that officials believe events were “isolated to the attendees at that party” and did not believe the threat was directed at the community at large.
Bivens said police were originally called about midnight about excessive noise coming from the building, and patrol officers were assured that the noise would be turned down. A state police mounted unit was sent to monitor the situation and for crowd control if needed.
Upon arrival, mounted unit members heard gunshots inside, called for backup, and then heard more gunshots and saw people fleeing from doors and windows. Some began to aid to injured people “collapsing outside the building,” and others went inside and found more victims, Bivens said. No state police or horses were injured, he said.
Bivens said more than 150 people were believed to be present at the time of the shooting, and the building wasn’t particularly large and would have been “very full” at the time. When the shooting began, those inside «exited that building in any way possible,” he said.
“You can imagine the chaos that would ensue from a number of gunshots in a relatively confined space,” he said. “People dove through windows, people ran through doors, ran through porch railings, trying to get away from that scene.”
An 18-year-old man from Chicago was critically injured, and an 18-year-old man from Florida was also among the victims. The others who were shot were all from Pennsylvania: three men ages 19, 20 and 22; two 19-year-old women; and a 23-year-old woman.
The wounded were taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center in Indiana, Pennsylvania; UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Marcy in Pittsburgh; and Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. Six remain hospitalized, one critically, while two had been treated and released, police said later Sunday.
Officials are tracking down who rented the venue for the party, which required payment of a fee before entry, and who was hosting the event, Bivens said.
No suspects were in custody, and police asked anyone with information to contact troopers in Indiana County. Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers announced a $10,000 reward for information in the case leading to arrests and prosecution, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has offered up to $5,000 more.
The shooting scene is about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which was having its homecoming weekend. The school’s vice president for student affairs, Thomas Segar, said two of the injured were students, and officials were working with their families to provide support. Campus activities were going on as scheduled with enhanced police presence, a university official said.
“We understand that incidents like last night’s violence are frightening and may cause continued feelings of fear and worry,” Segar said, before providing information about mental health support and counseling.
Neighbor Robert Miller said he and his wife heard loud music coming from the building as they were about to go to bed.
“Then all of a sudden, I heard about 20 gunshots,” he told the Tribune-Review. “There was people lying on the edge of the sidewalk out there. It’s terrifying.”
His wife, Ellen Ober, said, “There were people everywhere crying and screaming.”
Trooper Cliff Greenfield said investigators were trying to gather as much information as possible from witnesses.
“Clearly we have not been able to interview everyone who was there,» he told the newspaper. «People were fleeing the scene — it was a chaotic scene.”
The Chevy Chase Community Center was built in 1971 by a group established in 1969 to fight poverty and help those in need, according to its website. The center says its mission is to “cultivate, nurture, and sustain a peaceful and inclusive culture that brings community together with positivity, diversity, inclusion, education, nutrition, and love.”
Indiana County District Attorney Robert Manzi Jr., who is listed on the center’s board of directors, said the center provided “meals and a community atmosphere for people in need” and “has served as a place to help members of our community for many decades.”
Executive director Brandi Ports said on the center’s Facebook page that officials are “praying for everyone involved” and that the center would be closed until further notice.
“Please be in prayer for those involved, for our community, and for our staff and volunteers,” she said.
Nearby resident Lillian Clemons told the Tribune-Review that she is a former director of the center and that her brother is among the many people who get meals there. She said she believes the center shouldn’t be rented out on what she called “crazy weekends” such as homecoming.
“I’m about to cry. It’s hurtful because everybody struggles to keep this,” she said. “This was a service for the community. That’s what we need it for, for the people.”
