In the heart of North Philadelphia, Hunting Park has become much more than a green space. Thanks to the ongoing work of community organizations like Hunting Park United, this park and the surrounding area have been transformed into a key hub for well-being, health, and neighborhood connection.

“We represent the community in all investments in the park. We conduct monthly cleanups, offer community service hours, and organize events where we bring resources directly to residents,” explained Leroy Fisher, president of Hunting Park United.

Founded in 2008, the organization has taken on an active role as a steward of the park, promoting activities ranging from cleanup days to health fairs and employment opportunities. Its mission is clear: to keep the park clean, safe, and accessible for everyone.

A community approach to health equity

Hunting Park United’s commitment to health justice comes directly from within the community. “I live there… I want the park to be better than it was before,” Fisher said. This sense of ownership has been key in driving initiatives that benefit people of all ages.

Funding received through the Health Justice for Hunting Park Grant in 2025 has allowed the organization to significantly expand its impact. “It was a blessing… it helped us increase our programming, reach more residents, and organize larger events,” he noted.

Thanks to this boost, the organization has been able to bring essential services directly to the park, removing access barriers for many residents. These services include health screenings, physical activities, and educational resources.

“We want residents not to have to travel far to receive services… we bring them to the park, where they feel comfortable and safe,” Fisher explained.

Additionally, the experience has strengthened the organization’s structure. Hunting Park United recently became an independent nonprofit entity (501(c)(3)), allowing it to manage its own resources and continue growing.

An open space for everyone

Community participation is at the heart of Hunting Park United’s work. Through social media, its website, and in-person events, the organization invites all residents to get involved: “Everything is free… There is a wealth of information and resources for our community. Come, participate, and be part of it,” Fisher encouraged.

Upcoming events include cleanup days, job fairs, and family-friendly activities, all designed to strengthen the neighborhood’s social fabric.

When asked to describe the organization in one word, Fisher didn’t hesitate: “For everyone.” And it is precisely that inclusive spirit that defines its work.

In a city where solutions related to health and access to resources remain a challenge, initiatives like those of Hunting Park United show that change is possible when the community comes together.

“What affects one of us affects all of us… and together we can make a positive difference,” Fisher concluded.
