Premio Fundadores a Leticia Roa

Noche de música en vivo y baile de Los Bomberos De La Calle con comida de Le Virtu, Mayuri Mendoza, Sri’s Company y festive libations, para celebrar a la activista comunitaria, periodista y ex miembro de la Junta de Fleisher, Leticia Roa Nixon, quien recibirá el Premio de los Fundadores de este año en honor a su dedicación para animar a la comunidad latina de Filadelfia al presentar sus historias a través de su periodismo activista y su práctica artística. El evento del Premio del Fundador es parte de una celebración de un mes que también presenta la décima celebración anual del Día de los Muertos en Fleisher, organizada por La Calaca Flaca. Founder’s Award to Leticia Roa

Evening of live music and dance by Los Bomberos De La Calle with food by Le Virtú, Mayuri Mendoza, Sri’s Company, and festive libations as celebrate community activist, journalist, and former Fleisher Board member Leticia Roa Nixon! Leticia will receive this year’s Founder’s Award in honor of her dedication to uplifting Philadelphia’s Latinx community by bringing forth their stories through her activism and journalism, and her artistic practice. Semana de Prevención de Incendios

En una ceremonia de Bomberos y Proveedores de EMS del Año en el Museo Fireman’s Hall, el alcalde Kenney (cuyo padre fue bombero) declaró del 9 al 15 de octubre como la Semana de Prevención de Incendios en Filadelfia. Para ilustrar la importancia de los planes de escape del hogar, el PFD realizará un simulacro de incendio en toda la ciudad el jueves 13 de octubre a las 7:30 p. m. En ese momento, las sirenas de los aparatos contra incendios sonarán en toda la ciudad y se insta a los habitantes de Filadelfia a probar sus planes de escape de sus hogares. La Semana de Prevención de Incendios está vinculada al aniversario del Gran Incendio de Chicago, que estalló el 8 de octubre de 1871. El incendio mató a unas 300 personas, dejó a 100.000 sin hogar, destruyó más de 17.000 edificios y quemó unas 4 millas cuadradas de tierra.

From Home to Headquarters exhibit

The Peter Wentz Farmstead is pleased to announce the opening of its brand-new exhibit, “From Home to Headquarters: Washington in Worcester”. Visitors are invited to go back in time to October of 1777 when the Peter Wentz Farmstead was transformed from a family home to the military headquarters of General George Washington and his wartime military family. The exhibit features a detailed re-creation of the first-floor rooms used by Washington and his military staff to run the Continental Army during his stay. Learn about the troops’ movements in Montgomery County as part of the Philadelphia Campaign and the effects their presence had on residents like the Wentz family. Light installations by Bruce Munro

A decade after British artist Bruce Munro first exhibited at Longwood Gardens, he returns with Light: Installations by Bruce Munro, comprising eight installations situated both indoors and outdoors. Don’t miss works like Field of Light, featuring 18,000 illuminated stemmed orbs lit by fiber optics along Longwood’s Large Lake, and a giant sphere made of 1,820 recyclable bottles in the East Conservatory. Visitors to the attraction can also enjoy illuminated fountain performances — set to different music each night — on Thursdays through Sundays through October 30, 2022, at Longwood Gardens, 1001 Longwood Road, Kennett Square.

Mural Arts Month

Philly’s myriad of murals takes center stage during Mural Arts Month. In addition to a pop-up mural museum at the Independence Visitor Center, the month-plus celebration features: New mural dedications throughout the city. Special mural walking tours (and a running tour, too!) The family-friendly Mural Arts Fest in LOVE Park. Weekly artist meet-and-greet happy hours at Yards Brewing Company (Thursdays in October), and Mural making workshops for the little ones at the Please Touch Museum (select Saturdays in October). Plus: On October 24, 2022, artists unveil Freedom Constellations: Philadelphia — a series of interactive murals visible through the magic of augmented reality. Old City Fest

This celebration in the streets of America’s most historic square returns after a three-year hiatus. Expect a festival stage with live music, a family fun zone, a bevy of pay-as-you-go food and beverage options from Old City faves, and hand-crafted goods from local designers, retailers, and galleries. North 3rd Street from Market Street to Race Street and Arch Street from 2nd Street to 4th Street, Sunday, October 9, 2022, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Philly Music Fest

This six-day music festival is spread among some of Philly’s most iconic music venues, including The Ardmore Music Hall, World Cafe Live, Johnny Brenda’s and Milkboy. Acts include Mannequin Pussy, Low Cut Connie, Screaming Females and Ron Gallo. In all, 21 bands hit the stage during the event, which benefits local musicians and music education programs.
