Esperanzas y temores sobre la Inteligencia Artificial

(Foto: Ilustrativa/Pexels)

Why use a computer when you have a smartphone?

Are you someone who does everything online with their smartphone? You aren’t alone; over half of all traffic online is from phones. Did you know that for certain tasks, however, it’s faster, easier, or only possible on a computer?

Speed and capacity are two of the big advantages computers have over phones. With a computer, you have a keyboard and mouse at your disposal, which let you type and navigate around menus much faster. Plus, the larger screen on a computer lets you organize your digital space in a way a small phone screen can’t. These factors don’t just save you time; they also allow you to multitask. On a computer, you can more easily switch between apps and even have them both comfortably on screen at the same time. For example, you might have one window open with your resume, and another open with a job you are researching. Or if you’re shopping for the best deal, you can have pages for multiple products open at the same time for easy comparison.

In addition to these benefits, some things you can only do with computer skills. Many apps don’t give you access to all their features on a phone. For example, while Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (or Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides) do exist as phone apps, they don’t allow you to do anything more than the essentials. Plus, knowing how to use the computer enables you to help yourself and others. It gives you a competitive advantage in your job search and leads to higher paying jobs. School work requires computer skills too, so whether you’re in classes yourself or helping your family with theirs, being comfortable with the computer goes a long way.

If you are interested in building your computer skills with hands-on experience, sign up for workshops with Esperanza’s Hope Digital Skills Program. We have workshops available all summer that will equip you with essential skills. Call 215-297-4641 or email digitalskills@esperanza.us to register.

COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy among the Latino Community

(Foto: Ilustrativa/Frank Meriño/Pexels)

Health professionals and leaders have warned communities about the racial and economic inequities worsened by COVID-19. Vaccination is an essential tool in public health that must be used effectively to protect people, communities, and populations from serious illness, complications, and even death. However, COVID-19 vaccination has become a complicated problem in the United States due to inequalities, hesitancy, or the reluctance or refusal to vaccinate. Despite multiple studies of vaccine safety and its benefits, there is still hesitancy among U.S. citizens, particularly in the Latino community.

Studies show that Hispanics were hit harder by the economic effects of the pandemic being that half of Hispanic adults say their household has lost a job or income since Covid began spreading. Also, they were overrepresented in covid cases as a result of four in ten Hispanic adults being essential workers and therefore required to work outside their homes during the outbreak. Yet, there still remains a portion of Hispanics that are hesitant to vaccinate regardless of these situations.

The disparities that Latinos encounter puts them at a higher risk of getting COVID-19. For example, their living and working environments can put them at an increased risk of getting COVID-19. Specifically, Latinos in the United States were three times as likely to contract Covid-19 and twice as likely to die from it compared to the general population. According to the Pennsylvania Covid Tracking Project, Hispanics/Latinos were most likely to have contracted Covid-19. However, Latinos remain one of the largest groups to be hesitant about getting vaccines. Some reasons why Hispanics have expressed concerns with vaccines are due to lack of health insurance, limited transportation, language barriers with providers, not receiving factual information regarding vaccines, and mistrust in physicians, public health officials, and political sources. Families and communities can help address these concerns by supporting each other. For example, community members can carpool together to vaccination sites to assist individuals who lack a form of transportation.

There have been some encouraging improvements over the past few years when it comes to getting Latinos vaccinated since the start of the pandemic. There has been an increase in health networks and community leaders who are coming together and making resources more accessible for Latinos to receive proper vaccination. To make community members more comfortable, the people administering the advice and shots are culturally and linguistically catered to the communities in which they are serving. These networks are also expanding their outreach efforts to these communities to ensure information is spread properly. For example, non-profit organizations like Esperanza are ensuring that the community has access to COVID-19 vaccination and testing kits. Currently, the staff are working to address misinformation and disinformation by providing factual information about the COVID-19 vaccine. Specifically, Esperanza has been working with community members to create COVID-19 health materials in English and Spanish. Additionally, they have a COVID-19 vaccination hotline for community members to call or text if they have questions (267)-587-6192.

It’s important to stay up to date on your COVID-19 vaccination and encourage others who may be hesitant to get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best way to protect your health and those around you and it has been shown to provide a more reliable immune response than getting sick with COVID-19Vaccination has played a huge part in prevention, which has also been shown to dramatically lessen the severity of any symptoms that may arise should you get the virus. It is also important to be aware about new information regarding vaccines, especially with new variants expected to continue to come out. Pfizer and Moderna have developed updated bivalent vaccines due to the original ones being no longer authorized in the United States, protecting you against the original virus and Omicron variants. Those ages 6 and up are recommended to get one of the updated vaccines regardless of their Covid vaccination history.

The COVID-19 guidance has changed many times, which can cause more doubt among the Latino population. However, the CDC has taken initiatives to improve the messaging around COVID-19 vaccine recommendations. Currently, higher-risk individuals have more flexibility so they can choose to receive additional doses of the vaccine for added protection. New recommendations allow adults ages 65 and older and anyone ages 6 and older that are immunocompromised to receive an additional updated bivalent vaccine shot.

Although Covid cases may be lower as we approach the Summer, it’s essential to remain vigilant, encourage vaccination among people who are hesitant, and remember the risks of Covid. There are a multitude of resources out there to help you get vaccinated. You can go to your local pharmacy, clinic, or healthcare provider to get the help you need or go to https://www.vaccines.gov/. COVID-19 is still present so we must take the necessary precautions to remain healthy.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Esperanza Academy Charter School, a K-12 school in the Hunting Park neighborhood, is thrilled to announce the exceptional achievements of its graduates.  Esperanza Academy exists to create hope by offering quality education that meets the needs of a predominantly Latino community. As one part of Esperanza’s commitment to building an opportunity community in North Philadelphia where all can thrive, Esperanza Academy prepares students for success by developing their interests and opening pathways. Individualized programs, including academic majors, Advanced Placement courses, dual enrollment and early college programs are all an essential part of making that transformation possible.

Alex Jaquez-Peralta, one of the two co-valedictorians for the class of 2023, received a full-ride scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Mr. Jaquez-Peralta was an engineering major at Esperanza Academy, where he first developed an interest in computer science. Reflecting on his time at the school, Alex shared that the engineering program “allowed me to do projects in my own way and made me think more about what I want to do.”

This year, members of the senior class were accepted to over 100 different post-secondary institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, Drexel University, Lehigh University and Pennsylvania State University. According to the National Center of Education Statistics, the on-time college graduation rate of 92% for Esperanza Academy’s high school students is 5% above the US national average and 9% above the national percentage rate for Latino students.

Collectively, the senior class was awarded more than $9.6 million in scholarship funds. Mr. David Rossi, the Chief Executive Officer of Esperanza Academy shared that “Witnessing the many accomplishments and the hard work of our graduating class fills us with immense pride, knowing that their hard work and dedication have opened doors to a brighter future.»

Esperanza Academy students can also get a head start on their post-secondary studies while they are still in high school through the Early College Program in partnership with Esperanza College. 10% of the Class of 2023 have already earned an associate degree. The degrees they have completed include Associate of Science in Health Sciences, Associate of Science in Business Administration, Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice, Associate of Applied Science in Media and Technology, and Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Education.

Consistent with the Academy’s mission to prepare young adults who can use English and Spanish as tools for success, and to recognize the heritage and unique strengths of our community, the school offers the opportunity for students to earn the Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award granted by the state of Pennsylvania’s Department of Education to students who have attained proficiency in English and one or more other world languages by the time they graduate from high school. This special award celebrates being bilingual and all of the advantages which may come with that, such as having a more creative mind; a better understanding of other cultures; and a greater sense of empathy for others. Esperanza Academy is thrilled to share that almost 20% of this year’s graduating class have earned this esteemed recognition.

Esperanza Founder and CEO, The Reverend Luis Cortes, Jr. shares, “This is why Esperanza Academy was created: to ensure that our children and youth have access to the very best in academic and enrichment opportunities as they pursue their dreams and take up their places among the leaders of today and tomorrow in a range of industries. Despite the challenges facing young people in Hunting Park, students like Alex and the rest of our graduating class demonstrate the true possibilities when we invest into quality education.”

As Esperanza Academy celebrates the accomplishments of its students, the school remains committed to its mission of serving its community through education as a vehicle for social and economic progress. The school’s dedicated team of educators and staff, in partnership with parents and the community, continue to maximize students’ opportunities for learning and empower every student to thrive in every area of life.

Don’t cry for me, Philadelphia

Press conference on Monday's fatal shooting spree, Wednesday, July 5, 2023, in Philadelphia. (Photo: AP/Matt Slocum)

We did not need this shooter to tell us that we had a problem with gun violence in America and that we needed to get rid of those AR-15’s assault rifles, which are weapons of war. But now, we must all stand together and make the changes needed.

Rivers of tears have flooded the streets of The City of Love, and the pain will not be washed away so easily.

I spent the last summer in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 students and two teachers were killed, and many others injured. Some of the children were decapitated by these harsh bullets.

Today I am working with families in Colorado Springs involved with the shooting at Club Q, where 5 were killed and 25 injured. I am still amazed that no congressional steps have been taken to eliminate these god-awful weapons.

The pain and loss to these families and their loved ones is huge, and the damage to the community is incalculable. The fear is that this can happen to anyone anywhere.

Having lived in The City of Brotherly/Sisterly Love, I, too, am hurt by yet another senseless act of violence. It is the innocent who are the victims.

While many affected calls for changes in gun laws and look to the heavens for some answer, the NRA and its political allies dare to stand tall amongst the lost lives and tell lies about the 2nd Amendment and their right to own weapons. These pro-gun individuals instead, continue to push laws that make it easier to buy weapons and bullets, and push for weapons to be carried in public.

You might wonder why, if the NRA and their right-wing allies push for these horrific laws, ¿why don’t they allow armed individuals into their meetings and conventions? Just because they know that some of these gun toting individuals are walking time bombs.

There have been 184 mass shootings in 2023 so far, which is defined by the Gun Violence Archive as an incident in which four or more victims are shot or killed. These mass shootings have led to 248 deaths and 744 injuries.

More than 13,900 people killed in gun violence up to this year. And we know that we have more than 400 million weapons out there in the hands of our citizens.

At a Rally in 2013 in Seattle, where the mayor was with others organizing a march and rally against gun violence, 5 white men armed with long rifles stood about 50 yards from the gathering on a small hill, trying to look tough and to scare us. I was on the cabinet of the mayor of the time and decided to confront these individuals. I gathered up Bob, a tall white bearded Anglo friend to go with me. You must understand I had worked with tough gang members in El Salvador, Los Angeles and a few in Seattle, and know when I should be cautious.

They were surprised when we confronted them, asking if some of the gang members we knew could join them since they too liked their weapons. I must admit that for a period, I carried 2 loaded guns on me to intimidate my enemies and, perhaps, injure them if necessary.

It took the leader of these gun groups a minute, and finally, he said, ‘We would have to do a background check on them”. I smiled, knowing that they did not have to go through a background check to purchase their weapons. One day I would like to buy 500 NRA memberships for gang members and perhaps attend their national convention.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner organized many community leaders and family members to gather to grieve and look for solutions. I was driving and could not get all of it to land on my car radio. But we need these discussions to push us to do everything we can to curb this form of violence.

Homies Unidos in Los Angeles is an organization that deals with the youth and their families to work to diminish violence in all its forms. I started this organization in 1996 in El Salvador, and it is today run well by a former MS-13 boss, who has now become a great leader.

We must teach our people what to do when we get angry and hurt. We have not been taught how to defuse our emotions and avoid vengeance. Instead, we honor those who get vengeance and not the peacemakers.

Tania Romero a Film Maker from Philadelphia, and I, are making a documentary about the shooting at Club Q, to teach about the violence and hate that embroils these situations. The film will be called “Atrevida, the Fierro Story.” We will use it as a tool to educate the public. For more information, contact leno@magdaleno.org

My heart aches for my Philly family, and I hope that this City of Love can give them the support and comfort they will need in the days, weeks, and months to come.

Perhaps this great City of Love can build a monument to honor them and all those who preach and teach nonviolence.

Richie Fierro, the ex-military man who, without a weapon, stopped the shooter at Club Q, reminded me that PTSD is real and that many will suffer of it, because of this violence and will need medical support.

I believe that the great city of Philly will hold its people close as they have to travel down that road filled with nightmares, pains, and so many unanswered questions.
