May marks the start of election season in Major League Baseball. Earlier this week, MLB held a celebratory news conference at Dodger Stadium unveiling the All-Star Week schedule of events for the first Midsummer Classic held at Chavez Ravine since 1980.

The 92nd version of the clash of baseball stars from the American and National Leagues will be played on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

The Home Run Derby is the night before. This will be the first time that the Home Run Derby takes place in Dodger Stadium, a ballpark notorious for favoring pitchers and unfriendly to power hitters. Fans will continue to play a role in selecting the starting lineups for the MLB All-Star Game. MLB will share the details about how fans can cast their ballots in this election in the next few weeks. MLB will facilitate the participation of Spanish-speaking fans in this election by providing the All-Star Ballot in Spanish.

The last Phillies player to be elected by the fans to be in the starting lineup of an MLB All-Star game was second baseman Chase Utley in 2014.

While we await word from Major League Baseball about the All-Star voting process, we must do all we can to participate in the Pennsylvania Primary Election taking place in our neighborhoods on Tuesday, May 17, 2022. Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM that day.

If you have not registered to vote in PA by now, it is too late to do so and be able to vote in the May 17, 2022, primary.

You have until May 10, 2022, to request a mail-in ballot if you are registered to vote. If you request a mail-in ballot, this late in the process, you may risk not getting the completed ballot to your county election office by the May 17, 2022, deadline.

This is an important Primary election in Pennsylvania as we will be casting ballots in the process that elects a new Governor, Lieutenant Governor, US Senator, US Congress Member, State Representatives, and local election board officers.

To find your polling place and other related information, please visit www.philadelphiavotes.com or call 311. For those who live outside of the City of Brotherly Love, please visit www.vote.pa.gov.

For the last 20 years, Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act mandates that everything related to voting in three counties in Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Lehigh, & Berks) be available in English and Spanish. Accordingly, the ballot and all other materials will be available in Spanish in those counties.

This election will mark the first time that Section 203 of the Voting Right Act grants full access to all voting materials to people who speak Chinese in Philadelphia. When you go to your polling place, you will see the notices and the ballot in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

If you confront problems at the polling place or have difficulty accessing information about voting in your language, please call the 866-OUR-VOTE hotline (866-687-8683) for English and 888-VE-Y-VOTA (888-839-8682) for Spanish.

“Bad officials are elected by good citizens who don’t vote,» said George Jean Nathan, American Drama Critic and Magazine Editor.
