Global Philadelphia’s annual celebration paired cultural performances, civic leadership and historic preservation during America’s 250th anniversary year.
Philadelphia, PA – Global Philadelphia Association held its 11th Annual World Heritage City Celebration on September 10 at the Crystal Tea Room, gathering civic, cultural and business leaders to celebrate the city’s history, global identity and future.
Before the speeches and awards began, the city’s cultural diversity was already on display.
Guests entering the Crystal Tea Room were greeted by harpist Medgina, whose music carried through the entrance during cocktail hour. BollywoodTech Philly later took the stage with a dance performance, followed by Philly Bomba Plena.
Together, the performances brought music and movement into the room and set the tone before the evening shifted to remarks from speakers representing many of the city’s civic and cultural communities.
Philadelphia became the first U.S. city designated a World Heritage City in 2015, joining an international network of cities recognized for their cultural and historical significance. The designation carries added weight this year as the city and country celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence.
“As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, this year’s celebration is an opportunity to reflect on our city’s remarkable history while looking ahead to its future as a center of culture, diplomacy and international collaboration,” said Zabeth Teelucksingh, president of Global Philadelphia Association.
That focus on the future continued throughout the evening.
Rev. Dr. Lorina Marshall-Blake was recognized for her role in establishing the celebration’s Young Professional Co-Chair initiative, which created a path for emerging civic leaders to participate in the World Heritage City mission. This year’s young professional co-chairs were Vanessa Caracoza and Rishaun Hall.
“The greatest legacy we can leave is not for ourselves, but what we build for the next generation,” Lorina said.
The program also included the reveal of an updated National Historic Landmark Map. Redesigned since its original 2019 launch, the new version is bolder, more interactive, and more informative, offering residents and visitors another way to engage with Philadelphia’s historic sites.
Former Mayor Michael A. Nutter, one of the event’s co-chairs, was also recognized. Fellow co-chair Leslie Anne Miller praised his years of service to Philadelphia, saying, “In this City of Champions, he belongs at the top of the list.”
The evening’s major honor went to longtime 6abc Action News Chief Meteorologist Cecily Tynan, who received the 2026 Distinguished Journalism Globy Award after concluding more than 30 years at the station.
“As I reflect on more than 30 years at 6abc, I’m incredibly grateful to have served the Greater Philadelphia community and witnessed the resilience, generosity, and spirit that make this city so extraordinary,” Tynan said. “Receiving this recognition from Global Philadelphia Association is a tremendous honor, and I’m proud to celebrate Philadelphia’s place as a World Heritage City during such a historic year for our nation.”
Tynan later joined longtime colleague and friend Nydia Han for a fireside conversation.
Philadelphia’s World Heritage designation recognizes a city known around the world for its history. The celebration also reflected the Philadelphia of today, shaped by cultures from around the world and leaders across generations.
Lorina’s words gave the night its clearest message. Philadelphia’s history is still being carried forward by the people who live here now and by those who will shape what comes next.
