What began a quarter century ago as an effort rooted in survival in South Philadelphia has now received recognition at the highest level of state government. On April 11, 2026, at a ceremony rich in symbolism held on the iconic Ninth Street, the Mexican community not only unveiled its renewed identity banner but also received an official letter from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, delivered by Héctor Herrada.

This gesture marks a historic milestone: 25 years after its establishment, Mexican commercial activity has moved from the margins to be recognized as a fundamental pillar of the state’s economic prosperity.

A symbol of belonging: The value of the new banner

For business owners on Ninth Street, the banner is far more than signage—it is a declaration of territory, identity, and culture. As Felipa, president of the Mexican American Business Association of Philadelphia (AEMP), explained, the banner plays a key role in helping new generations recognize their roots and take pride in the space their parents built in a neighborhood shaped by deep migratory history.

The new banner represents:

  • Visual identity, serving as an official welcome to a corridor offering traditional Mexican cuisine and craftsmanship.
  • Recognized territory, reflecting the transformation of a historically Italian area that now pulses with Latino entrepreneurial energy.

The Governor’s Letter: Support in times of uncertainty

The centerpiece of the event was the reading of Governor Shapiro’s letter, presented by Héctor Herrada. At a time when immigrant communities often face fear and uncertainty, the message provided meaningful institutional support.

“Mexican and Hispanic-owned businesses play a key role in Pennsylvania’s development and prosperity… These talented entrepreneurs often go on to become employers and community leaders.”
Josh Shapiro, Governor of Pennsylvania

Herrada, a member of the association’s founding group, noted that the letter commemorates the fourth anniversary of the formalization of AEMP and validates the economic contributions of thousands of business owners who support the state through taxes and Social Security.

25 years of resilience on Ninth Street

Although AEMP was formally established in 2020, the Mexican business movement in the area marks 25 years since the opening of the first store. What Andrés, the association’s vice president, describes as “day-and-night work” has transformed the local economy, turning once-vacant storefronts into thriving businesses. Today, these enterprises benefit from specialized consulting services and façade‑improvement funding exceeding $100,000.

The delivery of the Governor’s letter and the unveiling of the new banner close a chapter defined by perseverance and open a new era of consolidation and recognition. The Mexican community on Ninth Street is no longer simply asking for space—the state now acknowledges that Pennsylvania’s prosperity would be incomplete without it.
