The city has scheduled numerous local, information-packed events featuring community resources during what is known as «Pink October»

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (also known as «Pink October«). In Philadelphia, the observance is marked by a strong community focus; throughout the month, rallies and events are held to raise awareness about this type of cancer, which typically –though not exclusively– affects women. The primary goal is to eliminate transportation and language barriers to ensure early detection across all the city’s communities.

Activities held –or scheduled to take place– during the month include the «Philly Pass the Baton» walk on October 17. This event was notable for featuring a mobile mammography unit that offered free screenings to attendees, providing support and empowerment to individuals and families in the fight against the disease.

Other scheduled awareness walk include the «House of Faith Ministries» event in West Philadelphia (October 24), which offers practical health information.

On October 31, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the non-profit organization Morivivi –which specializes in providing emotional support, education, and workshops for those facing cancer– will host a community conference on breast cancer at Taller Puertorriqueño (2600 N 5th St., Philadelphia, PA 19133) in collaboration with the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) and other organizations. This event will feature medical specialists from renowned institutions in the region.

Health Resources and Mammograms in Philadelphia

For those seeking check-ups or medical assistance, Penn Medicine operates a Mobile Mammography Unit that travels through Philadelphia neighborhoods, offering hospital-quality services. Centers such as Health Center 3 –part of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health– provide guidance and schedule mammograms for patients already in the city’s public health system. Additionally, the American Cancer Society hosts informational sessions in Spanish led by local physicians to guide the community through the process. To sign up, you can contact María Vega at (215) 960-7012 or Morivivi2014@gmail.com.

Ongoing Support Organizations

In addition to the above, Philadelphia offers a support network through dedicated foundations whose work extends beyond the month of October.

Some of these include the «Cancer Support Community Greater Philadelphia» (CSCGP), which offers over 150 free monthly programs, wellness workshops, and family assistance; «Women of Faith and Hope» (WOFAH), which focuses on Philadelphia’s African American community; «Living Beyond Breast Cancer» (LBBC), which provides financial assistance for daily expenses to patients in the Philadelphia area and organizes annual educational summits; and «Rachel’s Helping Hands Cancer Foundation,» which helps families in the Philadelphia tri-state area cover copays for medications, doctor visits, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

For anyone wishing to make a difference in their community, the organization Susan G. Komen invites you to learn more about breast cancer awareness and research, as well as ways to support the Susan G. Komen mission, at www.komen.org/.
