With the presence of Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, Superintendent Tony B. Watlington, Sr., Ed.D., and Board President Reginald L. Streater, Esq., the new school year was officially launched on Monday, August 25, at Edward T. Steel School.

The School District of Philadelphia enthusiastically began the 2025-2026 school year. Superintendent Tony B. Watlington started the morning by personally greeting bus drivers at the Broad Street Garage, demonstrating his commitment to every part of the education system. Later, at Edward T. Steel School, accompanied by Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and Board President Reginald L. Streater, he welcomed students and staff with pom-poms and great joy, served breakfast to attendees, and participated in the ceremonial ringing of the bell. Afterwards, the officials addressed the press before concluding the day, where the superintendent engaged with students and families during dismissal.

Mayor Cherelle L. Parker stated: “Back to school is a time of hope and new opportunities. Our commitment is that every student in Philadelphia has access to quality education and the support needed to succeed.

Parents in attendance expressed their happiness and hope, confident that this year will bring great achievements for their children.

This start to the school year reaffirms the commitment of officials, educators, and families to a cycle filled with learning, inclusion, and hope for all students in Philadelphia’s School District.
