An afternoon filled with smiles, school backpacks, free haircuts, and words of inspiration took place this Thursday, August 21, at 4937 Mulberry Street, where several Philadelphia Phillies players connected with families from the northern part of the city. The event was organized by the Fuente de Agua Viva Christian Church, under the leadership of Pastors Harrison and Manuela Capellán.

Among the players present were José Alvarado, Ranger Suárez, Edmundo Sosa, Jesús Luzardo, Rafael Marchán, Tanner Banks, and Orion Kerkering. They all actively participated by signing autographs, handing out school supplies, taking photos, and sharing words of encouragement with children and youth preparing to return to school.

What does it mean to you to be here with the Philadelphia community?

José Alvarado, Venezuelan pitcher, said: “I thank God for this opportunity; it’s been a beautiful experience. Never give up, fight for your dreams; nothing in life is impossible.”

The importance of education and sports

Rafael Marchán, the team’s catcher, emphasized: “There’s nothing more beautiful than having an education. Not everyone has the opportunity, but if you do, make the most of it because one day, that will speak well of you.

Ranger Suárez shared his own perspective: “I’m very happy to be invited. Sports changed my life from a young age. It brought me joy and kept me focused. My advice is: don’t stop supporting kids in sports.”

Childhood memories and advice to the next generation

Edmundo Sosa, Panamanian shortstop, fondly recalled his childhood: “I grew up in Panama dreaming of reaching the Major Leagues. Today, that dream is a reality. Seeing these excited kids reminds me of myself at that age. Always listen to your parents; don’t let anyone tell you can’t achieve something. If we have God and good health, all dreams may come true.”

Tanner Banks, left-handed pitcher for the Phillies, also offered inspiration: “Connecting with the community, seeing the kids smile—that’s priceless. Believe in yourself, never give up, and work hard every single day.”

A decade of preparation, an unforgettable day

Pastor Harrison Capellán, who has also been the Phillies’ official barber for over 15 years, was the event’s main organizer: “This moment is special. We’ve been praying and planning for over 10 years. Today, by God’s grace and with the support of the Phillies, it became a reality. As their barber, counselor, and pastor, seeing these players serve with humility is a dream come true.”

Final message from Fuente de Agua Viva Church

“Our mission as a church is not just to share Christ, but to serve and bless through action,” said Harrison. “We want to be an influential church in Philadelphia, committed to service and to our community.”

The event left a lasting impact on all who attended, showing how sports and faith can come together to change lives beyond the playing field.
