La Liga del Barrio, Philadelphia’s first Latino youth basketball league, celebrated 25 years of empowering young people through sports, education, and mentorship at its 25th Anniversary Gala, held on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Philadelphia Ballroom.
Founded in 2000 by then–City Councilman Angel L. Ortiz and former Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Pat Croce, La Liga del Barrio has become a pillar of community development in North Philadelphia. Throughout its history, the nonprofit organization has impacted more than 18,000 young people, promoting a model that unites education and athletics by requiring every player to submit a school progress report before stepping onto the court.
“La Liga was never just about basketball; it was about creating a lifeline for our community,” said Ray Álvarez, President and CEO of La Liga del Barrio. “For 25 years we have proven that when education and mentorship come first, you can change the trajectory of a child’s life. Now, we’re ready to secure a permanent home where the next generation can build an even stronger future”.
The gala featured cultural performances, dinner, a silent auction, alumni jersey retirements, and special awards. Among the evening’s highlights were keynote remarks from Dr. Ariel Lajara, Assistant Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia, and Michael Going, Vice President of Social Responsibility and Fan Development for the Philadelphia 76ers.
One of the most emotional moments of the night came when several community leaders and institutions were honored, including Dr. José Lebron (Edison High School), John Seman (Chichester School District), Joshua Klaris (Lenfest North10), Angela Villani (Mariana Bracetti Academy Charter School), Dr. Alycia A. Marshall (Community College of Philadelphia), and Rev. Luis Cortés (Esperanza).
“I am deeply grateful to be honored by La Liga del Barrio,” said Rev. Cortés. “For two and a half decades, they have nurtured thousands of our children. Thank you, La Liga, for thinking of me.”
Josh Klaris, Executive Director of North10, also emphasized the spirit of collaboration:
“North10 is honored to be recognized as a valued community partner. Each of these organizations was acknowledged for their lasting impact on education and youth empowerment in North Philadelphia.”
This year, the gala also recognized two outstanding alumni — Radame Rivera and Tiana Garvin — retiring their jerseys in honor of their leadership on and off the court. They join international professional basketball player José Ortiz as the only three athletes to ever receive this distinction in La Liga’s history.
With this celebration, La Liga del Barrio looks to the future with an ambitious vision: to build its first permanent gym and community center along the American Street Corridor — an expansion that will increase programming by 75% and secure a legacy of opportunity for generations to come.
