Philadelphia’s latino community begins 2026 with a cultural offering designed for the entire family. Philadelphia Theatre Company presents Havana Hop, an interactive children’s show that blends music, dance, and cultural identity with a powerful message of confidence and belonging.

Carolina Vargas, Director of marketing at Philadelphia Theatre Company, shared details about the production, which will be presented on January 17 and 18, 2026. “We are very excited to begin 2026 with a special show for families and children,” Vargas said. “It’s a story about identity, courage, and reconnecting with our roots.”

Havana Hop is a children’s story about culture and confidence. The show was written, choreographed, and performed by Paige Hernandez, with original music by Nick “Nick tha 1da” Hernández and Kris Funn. The production is presented by Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning in Virginia and was developed by Playhouse Square in Ohio.

The performance tells the story of Yeila, a young girl who dreams of performing on stage but struggles with intense stage fright. Through an imaginary journey, Yeila connects with her Cuban roots and learns to believe in herself. In a dynamic and energetic staging, a single actress portrays three generations, celebrating culture, creativity, and Latino identity. “Yeila lives in the United States and, like many Latino children, exists between two cultures,” Vargas explained. “In that process, she remembers her Cuban roots and embarks on a journey that takes her to Havana, where music, dance, food, and family help her discover who she is.”

Salsa music, family memories, and cultural heritage become key elements that help the protagonist overcome her fear and embrace her identity, delivering a powerful and relatable message for Latino families in Philadelphia.

Performances of Havana Hop will take place on Friday, January 17, and Saturday, January 18, 2026. In addition, a relaxed performance will be offered on Sunday, January 18, at 3:00 p.m., designed especially for children with autism and for adults and families with sensory needs.

This adapted performance creates a more inclusive and welcoming theatrical environment, reinforcing Philadelphia Theatre Company’s mission to ensure that young people of all abilities can enjoy professional theater.

“We recognize that every child is different,” Vargas noted. “We are committed to making this experience comfortable and accessible for everyone.”

Havana Hop offers not only entertainment, but also representation and reflection, positioning itself as a meaningful cultural experience for Philadelphia’s diverse Latino community.
