At Esperanza Cyber Charter School, the International Thespian Society (ITS) is more than just a club; it is a vibrant community where students discover their voices, build lasting relationships, and create meaningful experiences through the art of theater. Reflections from ITS members reveal a shared understanding: theater is not simply performance it is belonging, expression, and growth.

For many students, theater represents a safe space. It is a place where they can be themselves without fear of judgment, explore their creativity, and express emotions in ways that might not otherwise feel possible. One student described theater as “a safe place… fun and I feel safe,” while another emphasized that it is “a chance to express yourself freely, no fear of being judged.” These sentiments highlight the essential role theater plays in fostering emotional security and confidence among students.

Beyond personal expression, ITS cultivates a strong sense of community. Students consistently point to friendships and shared experiences as some of the most meaningful aspects of their involvement. Whether it’s laughing through rehearsals, supporting one another backstage, or celebrating a successful performance, these moments create lasting bonds. As one student shared, “It’s a great way to make friends and be part of a supportive theatre community.” Another reflected on the joy of simply being together: “Any moment that involves laughter… my theater members have the most contagious laughs.”

Teatro in Action: Creating La Isla Que Canta

Teatro Club has been especially busy this year, pushing beyond traditional performance into original creation. Students have been exploring the potential of placing a “Greek chorus” in a setting deeply meaningful to many of them. Through extensive research, writing, workshopping, designing, and directing, they have developed an original production titled La Isla Que Canta.

In this powerful piece, el juracán threatens a community. Though fearful, the people come together to eat, to dance, to sing, to love (even if a little tragically), and to carry forward a story whispered through the island for centuries. La Isla Que Canta stands as both a love letter to Puerto Rico and a reminder for all of us to choose love.

The production was presented at the Esperanza Arts Center on April 29. The impact of this work extends even further. La Isla Que Canta is currently a candidate for the Philadelphia Young Playwrights 2026 Annual Playwriting Festival. If selected, students will have opportunities to workshop their play with industry professionals, pursue optional publication, and potentially see their work produced by Temple University, an honor that would recognize them as emerging playwrights.

At the same time, students’ dedication to teatro is being recognized in another meaningful way. Through their commitment and hours of participation, many are working toward induction into the International Thespian Society, celebrating their achievements in the performing arts. More information on how the community can support and celebrate these accomplishments will be shared soon.

Leadership and growth remain central to ITS. Student leaders are focused on building an inclusive, supportive environment while expanding opportunities through productions, workshops, and collaborations. Their goal is clear: to ensure every member feels a deep sense of belonging while continuing to grow as artists and individuals.

Students also recognize theater as a space for skill development. Participation in ITS builds confidence, communication, teamwork, and creativity skills that extend far beyond the stage. With opportunities ranging from acting to directing, technical roles to design, students are empowered to explore their passions and discover new talents.

Memories made through ITS are deeply meaningful. Students recall everything from unforgettable rehearsals filled with laughter to the excitement of live performances. Moments like taking a final bow to an applauding audience or successfully executing a challenging scene leave a lasting impact. One student described the pride of seeing their work appreciated after a performance, while another reflected on the simple joy of rehearsals: “Every rehearsal!!”

Looking ahead, students are eager for what’s next, more productions, new experiences, and expanded opportunities. Even graduating seniors hope to remain connected, giving back to the program that helped shape them.

Ultimately, ITS at Esperanza Cyber Charter School is not just about theater it is about transformation. It is where students find their voices, build confidence, and become part of something bigger than themselves. Through creativity, collaboration, and community, theater becomes a powerful force that shapes not only performances, but people.
