Trump elige al senador Marco Rubio como secretario de Estado: medios

Medios de prensa de EE. UU. informan que el senador por la Florida Marco Rubio fue elegido por Donald Trump para encabezar la Secretaría de Estado. El legislador de origen cubano sería el primer hispano en esa posición.

Donald Trump eligió al senador estadounidense Marco Rubio para ser su secretario de Estado, informaron el lunes el New York Times y otros medios de prensa, lo que pone al político nacido en Florida en camino de ser el primer latino en ocupar el cargo de máximo diplomático de Estados Unidos, una vez que el presidente republicano electo asuma el cargo en enero.

Rubio era sin duda la opción más dura en la lista de Trump para secretario de Estado, y en el pasado ha abogado por una política exterior enérgica con respecto a los enemigos geopolíticos de Estados Unidos, como China, Irán y Cuba.

En los últimos años ha suavizado algunas de sus posturas para alinearse más estrechamente con las opiniones de Trump. El presidente electo acusa a los anteriores mandatarios de Estados Unidos de llevar al país a guerras costosas e inútiles y ha abogado por una política exterior más comedida.

La nueva administración se enfrentará a un mundo más volátil y peligroso de lo que era cuando Trump asumió el cargo en 2017, con guerras en Ucrania y Oriente Medio, y China alineándose más estrechamente con los enemigos de Estados Unidos, Rusia e Irán.

La crisis de Ucrania ocupará un lugar destacado en la agenda de Rubio.

Rubio, de 53 años, ha dicho en entrevistas recientes que Ucrania necesita buscar un acuerdo negociado con Rusia en lugar de centrarse en recuperar todo el territorio que Rusia ha tomado en la última década. También fue uno de los 15 senadores republicanos que votaron en contra de un paquete de ayuda militar de 95.000 millones de dólares para Ucrania, aprobado en abril.

«No estoy de parte de Rusia, pero por desgracia la realidad es que la guerra en Ucrania va a terminar con un acuerdo negociado», declaró Rubio a la NBC en septiembre.

La elección de Rubio tiene importancia tanto a nivel nacional como internacional.

Trump venció a la vicepresidenta demócrata Kamala Harris en las elecciones del 5 de noviembre, en parte gracias al gran número de latinos, que habían votado mayoritariamente por los demócratas en anteriores ciclos electorales, pero que se han convertido en un grupo demográfico cada vez más diverso en sentido político, con cada vez más latinos votando a los republicanos.

Al seleccionar a Rubio para un papel político clave, Trump puede ayudar a consolidar los logros entre los latinos y dejar claro que tienen un lugar en los niveles más altos de su administración.

Rubio era uno de los tres aspirantes finales a la vicepresidencia de Trump. El presidente electo se decantó finalmente por el senador de Ohio J.D. Vance, una figura de la derecha dura conocida por sus posiciones aislacionistas en política exterior.

Un político duro ante China y Cuba

Algunos de los partidarios de Trump se mostrarán escépticos ante su decisión de recurrir a Rubio, que hasta hace poco mantenía posturas potentes en política exterior que contradicen las de Trump.

Durante el mandato de Trump 2017-2021, por ejemplo, Rubio copatrocinó una ley que dificultaría la retirada de Trump de la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte, al requerir dos tercios del Senado para ratificar la salida.

Trump lleva años arremetiendo contra los países miembros de la OTAN que no cumplen los objetivos de gasto militar acordados y advirtió durante la campaña que no sólo se negaría a defender a las naciones «morosas» en la financiación, sino que también animaría a Rusia «a hacer lo que les dé la gana» con ellas.

Rubio es uno de los principales «halcones» frente a China en el Senado.

Más notablemente, pidió al Departamento del Tesoro en 2019 que iniciara una revisión de seguridad nacional de la adquisición de Musical.ly por parte de la popular aplicación china de medios sociales TikTok, lo que provocó una investigación y una problemática orden de desinversión.

Como principal republicano en el Comité de Inteligencia del Senado, también ha mantenido la presión sobre la administración de Joe Biden, exigiendo que bloquee todas las ventas a Huawei a principios de este año después de que la sancionada empresa de tecnología china lanzó una nueva computadora portátil impulsada por un chip de procesador Intel AI.

Rubio, cuyo abuelo huyó de Cuba en 1962, también se opone abiertamente a la normalización de las relaciones con el gobierno cubano, una postura que comparte Trump.

El jefe de la subcomisión de la Cámara de Representantes que supervisa los asuntos latinoamericanos, también es un crítico frecuente y feroz del gobierno de Nicolás Maduro en Venezuela.

PHILADELPHIA – The City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Marathon Weekend race officials have an all-star lineup of title partners and events ahead of the 31st running of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Philadelphia Marathon.

Race Weekend 2024 features the AACR Philadelphia Marathon and Nemours Children’s Run on Sunday, November 24; the Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon and Rothman Orthopaedics 8K on Saturday, November 23; and a free two-day Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, November 22 and Saturday, November 23. In addition to the races, open to the public will be a Children’s Zone, offering family-friendly activities including a rock-climbing wall, bounce zone, obstacle course, face painting, and more.

This year’s Marathon Weekend will be the largest anticipated attendance in race history at 37,000 participants. Registration closed in September 2024 with:

17,000 participants for the AACR Philadelphia Marathon.
15,000 participants for the Dietz & Watson Half Marathon.

Registration for the Nemours Children’s Run is currently open but is also anticipated to sell out.

New this year, the City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Marathon Weekend announced there will now be prize money and awards for the top finishers in the Open Division across the three gender categories (Men’s, Women’s, and Nonbinary). This will be the first year in the history of the Philadelphia Marathon that participating non-professional athletes can compete to win prize money as top finishers. This change expands opportunities for local and non-professional athletes to receive cash awards.

Shapiro administration delivers donated stuffed toys collected from L&I’s annual safety inspections and joy this holiday season

Every year, L&I collects samples of stuffed toys that will be sold in Pennsylvania for routine inspections for contents, choking hazards and general safety

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Departments of Labor & Industry (L&I) and Human Services (DHS) started the 2024 holiday season Tuesday with the annual donation of stuffed toys collected throughout the year by L&I during routine safety inspections. These toys will be distributed to Pennsylvania families through DHS’ Holiday Wish program.

«This annual tradition of donating inspected toys to the Holiday Wish program represents the best of public service – ensuring safety while bringing joy to Pennsylvania’s children during the holiday season,» said L&I Secretary Nancy A. Walker. «We encourage all Pennsylvanians who are able to consider giving to holiday charities this year. These simple acts of kindness can create lasting memories for children across our Commonwealth.»

Under state law, L&I’s Bureau of Occupational and Industrial Safety must inspect all new stuffed toy samples for contents, choking hazards, and general safety. Toys that pass inspection get a registration number, which is on every stuffed toy sold in the Commonwealth. Through this process, L&I accumulates hundreds of toy samples each year.

On Tuesday, L&I delivered 749 stuffed toys to DHS for its Holiday Wish program, started in 1989 by DHS employees – an increase from the 650 donated last year. Over the years, Holiday Wish has grown to include hundreds of employees in various state agencies, allowing the program to reach thousands of individuals in need around Pennsylvania during the holiday season.

The Stuffed Toy Manufacturing Act was recently updated when Governor Shapiro signed Act 30 of 2024 into law. Act 30 eliminated a long-standing ban on using recycled materials in stuffed toys sold in the Commonwealth. The updated law requires all stuffed toys offered for sale in PA to have a law label securely attached, including a statement that the toy is made from all new materials, all recycled materials, or a blend of new and recycled materials and the manufacturer’s or importer’s registration number from Pennsylvania, starting with «REG. NO. PA.» The law aims to protect children by ensuring stuffed toys are safe, properly labeled, and free from harmful substances.

“The Department of Human Services works every day to make it possible for people to achieve a better life, whether that’s through assistance in accessing essential basic needs like food and health care, or by giving back to families who may be in difficult circumstances through our Holiday Wish program. This work is fundamental to our mission, and I am extremely proud to work with so many state employees with compassion for our fellow Pennsylvanians who help make the holidays better and brighter for the families we serve,” said DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh. “Every Pennsylvanian should know that DHS’ programs are here to help. If you are having trouble financially in any way, I encourage you to reach out to DHS to apply for assistance and see if we are able to help you ease your situation.”

As families or individuals visit local DHS County Assistance Offices (CAO) to apply for benefits, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Medical Assistance (Medicaid), CAO caseworkers identify families and older adults in need to take part in the Holiday Wish program. Holiday Wish participants then select a few gifts they need or would like to receive, and state employees sponsor a family or individual to ensure they receive special gifts during the holiday season. Commonwealth agencies and the Pennsylvania National Guard meet in December to distribute these gifts to hundreds of families across Pennsylvania.

Applications for public assistance programs can be submitted online through the COMPASS website. On-site CAO services are available if clients cannot access online services or need assistance that cannot be accessed through the COMPASS website, the myCOMPASS PA mobile app, or by calling the Customer Service Centers at 215-560-7226 for Philadelphia clients or 1-877-395-8930 for clients in all other counties.

El invitado de Trump que llamó a Puerto Rico «isla de basura» no se disculpará «con nadie»

El comediante Tony Hinchcliffe, que provocó la ira de los puertorriqueños por referirse a su isla como un basurero durante un mitin político en el que participó coo invitado del candidato Donald Trump, dejó claro hoy que no piensa disculparse «con nadie» por esas palabras.

Hinchcliffe admitió que el mitin de Donald Trump en el Madison Square Garden en Nueva York tal vez no fue el mejor lugar para hacer los comentarios, en los que además deslizó comentarios racistas contra palestinos, judíos y negroamericanos.

Hichcliffe dijo literalmente: «Hay una isla flotante de basura. Creo que se llama Puerto Rico».

El comediante defendió sus palabras en su pódcast «Kill Tony», grabado al día siguiente de su comentario pero emitido hoy. Ya entonces sus palabras habían causado una gran controversia, e hicieron que artistas puertorriqueños como Bad Bunny, Jennifer López o Marc Anthony arremetieran en su contra acusándole de racista e hicieran un llamado a votar en contra de Trump.

En ese pódcast, el comediante asegura que se trató de «un discurso sobre la libertad de expresión» y que por ello era blanco de críticas. «Soy la noticia. Hice referencia a Puerto Rico, que actualmente tiene un problema de vertederos, todos sus vertederos están llenos hasta el borde. Desafortunadamente soy la única persona que sabía sobre esto», dijo a su audiencia, tras lo cual aseguró que ama a los puertorriqueños.

«Son personas muy inteligentes, astutos en la calle. Son lo suficientemente inteligentes como para saber cuándo se los está utilizando como forraje político. Eso es lo que está sucediendo ahora mismo”, afirmó.

Acto seguido se reafirmó en que no pedirá perdón «a absolutamente nadie. Ni a los puertorriqueños, ni a los blancos, ni a los negros, ni a los palestinos, ni a los judíos» y ni siquiera de «mi propia madre» de quien también se burló en el Madison.

«Quizás ese lugar en ese momento no era el mejor lugar» para esos comentarios «pero de todos modos, a los medios de comunicación y a cualquiera que intente difamarme en línea: eso es lo que hago y eso nunca va a cambiar”, sostuvo.

Al parecer, Hichcliffe fue seleccionado para el mitin de Trump para tratar de conectar con audiencias jóvenes que escuchan pódcasts en lugar de medios de comunicación tradicionales, y también por su tono de incorrección política, pero tras estallar la controversia por los comentarios, Trump dijo que ni siquiera lo conocía.

Juez de Nueva York pospone una semana la decisión sobre anulación de condena a Trump

El juez de Nueva York que presidió el juicio penal al expresidente Donald Trump pospuso una semana, hasta el 19 de noviembre, la decisión sobre la posible anulación de su condena, tras la petición de la defensa del magnate que pidió desestimar el caso.

El juez Juan Merchan tenía previsto este martes responder a una moción de la defensa para anular la condena de Trump en Nueva York. Sus abogados habían reclamado que se le aplique el fallo sobre inmunidad presidencial del Supremo de EE. UU. o, en su defecto, se considere que sus derechos como presidente electo son a estos efectos similares a los de un presidente en ejercicio.

Según correos electrónicos presentados en la corte, el abogado de Trump, Emil Bove, dijo este fin de semana que la «suspensión y la desestimación son necesarias para evitar impedimentos inconstitucionales a la capacidad del presidente Trump para gobernar», después de conocerse la victoria del magnate en las elecciones presidenciales de la semana pasada.

En mayo, un jurado popular dictaminó en un veredicto en ese tribunal en Nueva York que Trump era culpable de 23 casos de falsificación de documentos para silenciar a una actriz porno con la que había tenido una relación extramarital.

La sentencia fue programada en un primer momento para el mes de julio, pero Merchan accedió a retrasarla hasta el 26 de noviembre para evitar cualquier interpretación de interferencia electoral. Es decir, la decisión final de Merchan sobre si seguirá con el caso o lo desestimará se tomará solo siete días antes de una sentencia que podría ser histórica.

En este caso, Trump podría enfrentar hasta cuatro años de prisión, pero los expertos apuntan que lo más seguro es que Merchan opte por imponer una sentencia más corta, o tal vez una de libertad condicional o de visitas periódicas a una corte.

Trump niega haber cometido ningún delito, sostiene su inocencia y acusa a los demócratas de estar haciendo una «caza de brujas » contra él.

La condena penal de Trump fue la primera a un expresidente y, este mes, el republicano pasó a ser el primer delincuente convicto que llegará a la Casa Blanca.

The supplier of semiconductor solutions is investing a minimum of $14 million into its Westmoreland County expansion, which will create at least 25 new manufacturing jobs and retain 215 existing jobs

Growing the technology and manufacturing industries in Pennsylvania is a key focus of Governor Josh Shapiro’s 10-year Economic Development Strategy

Harrisburg, PA – Today, Governor Josh Shapiro announced the Commonwealth’s $1 million investment to support the growth of leading semiconductor solutions supplier Powerex Inc. in Westmoreland County. The company will invest a minimum of $14 million to modernize and upgrade key assembly and testing capabilities at its facility in Youngwood, creating at least 25 new jobs and retaining an additional 215 existing jobs.

One of the last vertically-integrated power semiconductor facilities in the United States, Powerex will expand a module assembly facility, double its module assembly capacity, and grow its module reliability center as part of this project.

“Pennsylvania gets it done, and our strategic investments in companies like Powerex are helping to create jobs and economic opportunity as we continue working to make Pennsylvania the best state in the nation for businesses looking to thrive,” said Governor Josh Shapiro. “We’re focused on growing the Commonwealth’s vital industries, including technology and manufacturing, and have the innovation pipeline, skilled workers, and geographic proximity to major corridors and markets that companies need. My Administration will continue making meaningful investments to position Pennsylvania as an economic leader.”

Powerex received a funding offer from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) for a grant of up to $1 million for eligible project costs.

“Since day one, Governor Shapiro and our Administration have been laser focused on sending a strong message that Pennsylvania is open for business,” said DCED Secretary Rick Siger. “Our investments in companies like Powerex create good jobs for our workers and boost key industries like technology and manufacturing that are part of our Economic Development Strategy. We’re doubling down on critical investments that support the strategy to provide our Commonwealth with the greatest opportunities to succeed.”

Powerex is a leading supplier of discrete devices, modules, and high-power semiconductor solutions for many markets, including military power electronics applications, aircraft, alternate energy, electric vehicles, medical power supplies, and more.

Powerex is also receiving up to $3 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act to support its growth in Pennsylvania.

So, of course, we’re thrilled that Powerex is expanding and reshoring jobs as it builds a new semiconductor fabrication line.”

The manufacturing and technology industries are a prime focus in Governor Shapiro’s Economic Development Strategy, the first plan of its kind in almost 20 years. Governor Shapiro and Secretary Siger unveiled the economic development strategy earlier this year to serve as the blueprint for capitalizing the Commonwealth’s strengths and further spur our economy.

Since taking office, the Shapiro Administration has secured and announced over $3 billion in private sector investments.

The2024-25 bipartisan budget delivers on Governor Shapiro’s key priorities to make Pennsylvania more competitive economically, and includes:

México ha detenido a 3.015 criminales y 390.740 pastillas de fentanilo con Sheinbaum

Ciudad de México.– El Gobierno mexicano ha detenido a 3.015 criminales de alto perfil y ha confiscado 390.740 pastillas de fentanilo desde que asumió la presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum, el 1 de octubre, reveló este martes Omar García Harfuch, secretario de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana.

En total, la Administración federal ha asegurado 42 toneladas de droga, incluyendo las 390.740 pastillas de fentanilo, 14 kilogramos adicionales de esta sustancia, 22 kilos de heroína, más de 8.500 de marihuana, 20.075 de cocaína y 13.373 de metanfetaminas, según expuso el secretario en la conferencia matutina del Gobierno.

“Representan millones de dosis que no saldrán a las calles y no afectarán a la salud y desarrollo de miles de jóvenes», indicó el funcionario en el Palacio Nacional.

Los datos se presentan mientras crece la presión de Estados Unidos, en particular tras el triunfo electoral de Donald Trump, para controlar el tráfico de fentanilo desde México, que afirma que la droga y sus precursores químicos llegan desde Asia al país.

García Harfuch destacó la destrucción de 15 laboratorios clandestinos de drogas sintéticas en Baja California y Sinaloa, estados del norte del país, donde las Fuerzas Armadas decomisaron 185 litros y más de 5.000 kilogramos de sustancias químicas, 10 kilogramos de cocaína y 3,5 kilogramos de fentanilo.

Este operativo causó una afectación a las organizaciones criminales de 5.857 millones de pesos (292,85 millones de dólares), el estimado valor en el mercado de las dosis que podrían producir, detalló el funcionario.

También resaltó una detención en Tijuana de un presunto narcotraficante que transportaba 36 kilogramos de pastillas de fentanilo con un valor estimado de 130 millones de pesos (6,5 millones de dólares).

“Con estas acciones, reafirmamos que el Gobierno de México está actuando con firmeza para combatir la violencia en nuestro país y trabajar por la paz y la seguridad en todo el país», aseveró.

Entre las aprehensiones de alto perfil, el secretario reveló la del 31 de octubre de Zhi Dong ‘N’, ciudadano chino detenido en Ciudad de México y con una orden extradición a Estados Unidos por los delitos de asociación delictiva, distribución internacional de cocaína y operaciones con recursos de procedencia ilícita.

También está la de Itania Noemí ‘N’, presunta operadora de una célula delictiva del Cártel de Sinaloa y presunta principal generadora de violencia en el estado de Colima, en el Pacífico.

El presidente electo de EE. UU, Donald Trump, ha elegido a la gobernadora de Dakota del Sur, Kristi Noem, para ocupar la secretaría del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, informó este martes la cadena CNN que cita a fuentes familiarizadas con el proceso.

La elección de Noem, que llegó a sonar como candidata a la vicepresidencia, indica que el líder republicano se ha tomado en serio su compromiso de tomar medidas enérgicas contra la inmigración ilegal, según la cadena.

Con la elección de la gobernadora republicana, Trump se asegura que una persona leal dirija una agencia que él prioriza y que es clave para su agenda nacional, según el medio estadounidense.

Noem tendrá la tarea de supervisar una agencia en expansión que controla desde el sistema de Protección Fronteriza de Estados Unidos y el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas hasta la Agencia Federal para el Manejo de Emergencias y el Servicio Secreto de Estados Unidos.

La cadena CNN recuerda que Noem llegó a estar en la lista de candidatos de Trump para la vicepresidencia, pero su relación con el expresidente cambió después de la repercusión negativa que generó la publicación de su libro: “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward” (No hay vuelta atrás: la verdad sobre lo que está mal con la política y cómo hacemos avanzar a Estados Unidos).

En él, reveló que tuvo que matar a ‘Cricket’, su perro de raza pointer de 14 meses, cuando no mostraba signos de ser un perro de caza ideal.

Al parecer, la gobernadora relató que el perro era “imposible de entrenar”, según extractos publicados en prensa, y argumentó más tarde que esas anécdotas tenían como objetivo demostrar lo capaz que es de realizar algunos de los trabajos más espantosos de la vida cuando es necesario.

«El pueblo estadounidense sabe cómo gastar su propio dinero. Si elimina el despilfarro gubernamental y concentra el gasto federal en las funciones básicas del gobierno, el presidente Trump se ocupará de la deuda y desatará el crecimiento económico. ¡Eso es lo que hicimos en Dakota del Sur!», escribió la gobernadora en uno de sus últimos mensajes en X.
