The iconic coquí is once again at the center of attention. The controversy surrounding Puerto Rico’s beloved frog has gained international relevance after a viral post on the social platform Reddit, where U.S. tourists claimed to have used spray to silence these nocturnal frogs a symbol of Puerto Rican culture. Outrage quickly followed: hundreds of Puerto Ricans raised their voices in defense of the coquí, reminding the public that it is a species protected by U.S. federal laws and deeply rooted in the island’s identity.

Environmental experts in Puerto Rico have linked these actions to a broader pattern of disrespectful tourism, warning that silencing the coquí is not just about noise discomfort but a form of cultural violence. Public figures such as artist Bad Bunny spoke out, using their platforms to emphasize that this is not just a matter of sound, but a fight to preserve Puerto Rican culture and the environment.

The Diaspora Responds from Philadelphia

Although no similar cases have been reported in Philadelphia, the local Puerto Rican community has expressed concern over the offensive remarks made toward the island. “What’s happening in Puerto Rico with the coquí isn’t foreign to us in Philadelphia. The same cultural roots and pride in our Puerto Rican heritage rise here as well to denounce any attempt to erase its existence,” said a local resident.

I create content so people can contribute to the community. Our history isn’t being respected,” said Suárez. “My main goal is to make myself known through my content so the message can reach others.
