Dr. Ana Gamero Joins the conference to empower the next generation of Latino medical professionals.

With over 17 years at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, Dr. Ana Gamero seamlessly blends teaching with scientific research. “I’m a professor, I teach medical students, I run my own lab where I study colorectal cancer, and I mentor many students,” she explained. One of the aspects she values most about her work is the opportunity to guide young Hispanic students interested in science: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Latino students,” she said.

Beyond the lab, Dr. Gamero is a strong advocate for building the next generation of Latino physicians. She is one of the organizers of the Third Annual Update on Cancer Care in Latinos, Hispanics, and Latinx Communities, a conference that brings together professionals, researchers, students, and social workers from various institutions. “We started three years ago as a small idea to inform ourselves and help the Latino community. Today, it’s a free conference open to anyone interested in the medical and scientific fields,” she explained.

The event aims not only to share knowledge about prevention but also to build academic and professional support networks. “Many students haven’t received the mentorship they need to get into medical school. We want to guide them, help them meet the requirements, and provide information about scholarships and financial aid,” she emphasized.

With a career dedicated to research, teaching, and public service, Dr. Ana Gamero represents a generation of Latina women who are paving the way in science and medicine. “We Latinos are a strong community. If we are in leadership positions today, we have a responsibility to prepare the next generation so they can achieve their dreams too.”
