Timoteo Sports, a sports mentoring ministry that began 20 years ago in Kensington, has positively impacted more than 800 children and youth in various neighborhoods of North Philadelphia, including Hunting Park, Juniata, and the Northeast.
Pastor Rob Whitmire, founder and leader of Timoteo Sports, explains that the initiative started in two churches using sports as a bridge to connect with young people, offering them mentorship, tutoring, and discipleship. “Timoteo’s mission is to evangelize, disciple, and use sports as a tool to care for the youth in our community in a holistic way,” says the pastor.

Over the years, the program has grown and now offers year-round sports activities, including basketball, volleyball, flag football, and a summer camp. In addition, Timoteo engages with youth in public schools, supporting them with college applications and teaching them life skills.

Pastor Rob notes that one of the main challenges they face is a lack of financial resources. “Serving one child for a full year cost about $500, but we only charge a small fee, so we need to raise funds to cover the rest.” He also highlights the challenge of keeping young people away from screens and encouraging face-to-face social interaction.

“Sports not only strengthen young people physically and emotionally, but also teach them discipline, teamwork, and leadership,” Rob explains. “We want to be a support system not only for the children but also for their families, working together with parents to provide holistic care.”

Timoteo Sports has become a beacon of hope for many young people in Philadelphia. “Our goal is to provide opportunities that allow them to dream big and achieve goals that many believe are out of reach like earning a college degree or starting a professional career,” the pastor affirms.
The program invites the community to join in this work, whether through prayers, donations, or support with resources and space. “We feel blessed to serve our city and to be part of its growth and restoration.”
