Centro Musical of Philadelphia is a cultural institution recognized for its commitment to artistic development and the promotion of local talent. That’s why we spoke with its founder, Reinaldo Meléndez-Martínez, to learn more about his work and vision as part of our “Support Local” report series.

In the heart of Philadelphia’s Latino neighborhood, at the intersection of 5th Street and Lehigh Avenue, Centro Musical remains much more than a record store: it is a symbol of identity, memory, and community. Since 1960, it has been a meeting place for lovers of tropical music and, since 2014, under the Puerto Rican management of Reinaldo Meléndez-Martínez, it has continued its legacy as a defender of Latino culture: “We’ve been here for 68 years. We have everything from musical instruments and souvenirs to machines for making pasteles,” he said.
Reinaldo, passionate about salsa and Puerto Rican roots, has preserved the essence of the original business founded by the González family. In his store, visitors can find classic records, instruments, t-shirts, flags, and cultural items, as well as enjoy the company of other community members.

Centro Musical also serves as a gathering space, where local musicians often improvise performances, blending nostalgia with cultural resilience: “ Sales are down but it’s important for people to know that we are not just a store; we are those who listen to you, help if you need it, and we are from here, from the community. That’s why I want to take this opportunity to invite everyone to come to our business we work here with a lot of love.”

Supporting businesses like Centro Musical strengthens the local economy and preserves traditions that continue to unite generations in North Philadelphia.

Committed to the growth and well-being of our community, we reaffirm the importance of supporting local talent and businesses. From here, we say: “Apoya lo Local”
