“If you’re here, that means you care about something and that there’s something you’re tired of, just like me.” With these words, Colombian entrepreneur Carlos Giraldo began his speech during the official launch of his Democratic candidacy for an at-large seat on Philadelphia City Council on Thursday, October 8, at Mamajuana Café Philly.

Giraldo arrived in Philadelphia at the age of 17. In 2003, he graduated from the Greater Philadelphia Realty School and has since built a career in real estate. His experience has given him firsthand knowledge of the challenges families face in accessing housing, as well as the difficulties faced by entrepreneurs and small business owners.

In an interview, Giraldo explained that his decision to run for office stemmed from concerns about the direction the city is heading. “Seeing how laws in Philadelphia are changing and are not improving conditions for business owners or for people who want to stay in Philly,” he said, explaining what motivated him to enter politics. In his view, Philadelphia is experiencing demographic and economic decline despite its considerable potential for development. “We have to move it forward because it has so much potential, and we want it to be a world-class city,” he said.

During the campaign launch, Giraldo outlined his main priorities: housing and the cost of living. He proposes using available land and properties to create affordable housing. He also suggests reviewing programs such as Turn the Key to make purchasing a home easier.

Small businesses and taxes are another priority. His proposal includes reviewing taxes and exemptions applicable to small businesses, simplifying municipal processes, and making use of existing support programs. The third priority focuses on young people. Giraldo proposes expanding sports, arts, and science activities outside school hours, as well as promoting safe routes and clean streets in the areas studied.

When asked about the values that will guide his candidacy and his potential work on City Council, Giraldo cited ethics, professionalism, and the importance of implementing proposals effectively and measurably. “Making sure things get done—and done right,” he replied.

Regarding the integration of the Latino community, Giraldo said he considers himself a Philadelphian, regardless of his background. He believes their shared identity as city residents should serve as common ground. “We all have to act as one, regardless of your ethnicity, your ancestry, or how long you’ve lived in Philadelphia. You may have been here for 400 years or just one day; we are all Philadelphia,” he said.

Finally, when asked what distinguishes him from the other candidates, Giraldo pointed to his background outside traditional politics as one of his main differences. “I don’t come from traditional politics. I come from outside the system, with fresh ideas and a mindset focused on action, not just rhetoric,” he said.

Giraldo will compete in the Democratic primary on May 18, 2027. If he advances through the electoral process and wins, he would be responsible for representing residents across the entire city, rather than a specific area.
