For most high school students, summer vacation is a time to relax. But for Breendalis Pérez, a rising senior at Esperanza Academy, this summer brought an extraordinary opportunity: standing on the field in front of nearly 70,000 soccer fans, world-class athletes, and the bright lights of an international FIFA World Cup match.

Through a partnership between Coca-Cola and Esperanza Inc., she was selected for a once-in-a-lifetime experience as an official flag bearer during the World Cup match between France and Paraguay. She recently reflected on the unforgettable experience and the lessons she learned from it.

Esperanza Academy is proud of her for overcoming her fears and representing her school and community with confidence, grace, and enthusiasm.

Breendalis’ Experience in Her Own Words

“Until that day, I hadn’t really followed soccer. I recognized some of the players’ names, but I didn’t know which countries were competing or fully understand how the game worked. During our practice session, we were allowed to choose which side of the field we wanted to stand on, and each side was assigned a flag. I was chosen to carry France’s flag.

I was nervous beforehand, but it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. When I learned that nearly 70,000 people would be filling the stadium, I was terrified. But the moment I stepped onto the pitch, my nerves turned into pure awe. Hearing the crowd cheer and feeling that incredible energy completely erased my anxiety.

Being so close to the players was the most exciting part for me. The atmosphere in the stadium was unbelievable, especially when Kylian Mbappé scored France’s only goal of the match. The crowd erupted. I was also surprised by how focused the players were. I expected them to look relaxed or excited before the game, but they were completely locked in and concentrated.

Watching the game in person and experiencing the emotions of the fans gave me a new appreciation for soccer. I already knew it was important because it is played and celebrated all around the world, but actually being there helped me understand just how much the sport means to so many people.

Knowing it was July 4 and that the country was celebrating its 250th anniversary made me even more nervous. I knew more people would likely be watching the game, but it also gave me a strong sense of pride. Many of the other flag bearers were selected through athletic programs, while I had the opportunity because of my school. I felt honored to represent Esperanza Academy on such a significant day.

For my older sister, who attended with me, the highlight of the experience was simply watching me on the field. She was proud that I didn’t let my fears keep me from embracing such a remarkable opportunity. Although my parents couldn’t spot me on television, they were thrilled and proud that I had the courage to participate.

In the past, I often passed up opportunities because I was afraid. This experience taught me that there’s often less to fear than we imagine. It showed me the value of stepping outside my comfort zone and relying on the support of those around me. These are lessons I will carry with me into my senior year and beyond.”
