With an emotional ceremony filled with music, flavor, and cultural pride, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center hosted its event “United in Our Celebration” in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, bringing together hundreds of people to recognize Latino leaders who are transforming Philadelphia’s future.
Under the theme “Honoring the Pioneers of Change, Building the Future Together,” the gala—held on October 1 at the Kroc Center—highlighted the vision, courage, and service of those who drive progress and strengthen the Latino community across the region.
Recognizing Latino leadership
During the evening, several distinguished community members were honored; among them:
Hon. Danilo Burgos, Pennsylvania House of Representatives — Civic Leadership Award
María del Pilar Morales, radio and television host — Public Service Leadership Award
Norman Bristol Colón, Chief Diversity Officer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania — Outstanding Executive Leadership Award
Olga Negrón, Vice Chair of the Pennsylvania Latino Convention — Visionary Leadership Award
Debra M. Martínez, Project Manager, Pennsylvania Latino Convention — Team Spirit Leadership Award
In addition, Rev. Bonnie Camarda, Director of Government and Partnerships for The Salvation Army, presented an official proclamation from Governor Josh Shapiro, accompanied by members of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs (GACLA).
An Evening of art, faith, and community
The event was emceed by Hon. María Quiñones Sánchez, who guided an inspiring and festive program alongside the Kroc Center administrators, Majors Jason and Leslie Knaggs, Lt. JoeQuetta Sorrells, and Captain Benjamin Lyles, who offered prayers and welcoming remarks.
Attendees enjoyed lively cultural performances by Raíces Boricuas (Johnny & Aida Cruz) and the Nuuxakun Folklóric Group, along with delicious cuisine and desserts prepared by Vickie’s Sweets, led by Chef Vickiana Pérez.
One of the most moving moments of the night came from a video message by State Representative Danilo Burgos, who praised the Kroc Center’s ongoing commitment to unity, service, and empowerment for all Philadelphians.
“As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 2025, we are proud to host an event that highlights the importance of the Latino community,” said Rev. Bonnie Camarda. “Philadelphia’s fastest-growing population continues to strengthen our city through its history, culture, and economic contributions. United Celebration promotes unity, understanding, and mutual respect.”
