Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) will host a “No Hate in Our State” town hall on Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Penn Asian Senior Services (PASSi), 6926 Old York Road, Philadelphia, PA 19126. In response to recent racial tension experienced throughout Philadelphia, community leaders will come together to bridge divides and support residents through open, honest conversation.
“The racial tension we’ve seen recently in Philadelphia demonstrates the urgent need for spaces where people can speak honestly and be heard,” said PHRC Executive Director Chad Dion Lassiter, MSW. “This town hall is an opportunity for leaders and community members to come together, bridge divides, and work toward lasting healing.”
This town hall is part of PHRC’s statewide effort to confront hate, rebuild trust, and foster mutual understanding. “No Hate in Our State” events provide an open forum where residents, advocates, community leaders, and local officials can voice concerns, learn about their rights, address tensions, and begin the healing process. PHRC remains steadfast in its commitment to meet discrimination claims head on, reinforce state-level protections, and ensure Pennsylvanians have access to clear, accessible pathways to justice.
“In light of recent racial tensions and the loss of federal discrimination protections, it is critical that we come together as a community and confront these challenges directly,” said Rep. Napoleon Nelson, Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus Chair. “The PHRC’s commitment to meeting discrimination claims head on is essential to protecting the rights of Pennsylvanians, especially at a time when national safeguards are being dismantled. This ‘No Hate in Our State’ discussion brings us together in a moment of need while also increasing public awareness of the vital work required to ensure justice and equity across our Commonwealth.”
«Racial tensions ripple through entire neighborhoods and families, perpetuating generational trauma and sowing deeper division within,” added Rep. Darisha Parker, Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus Vice Chair. «Hate crimes are usually committed with brute force but hate can also be through words and policy as we are seeing federal protections removed. Creating space for these discussions is vital for us to move forward together.»
The Philadelphia event will feature a diverse panel of local leaders:
- Amber Harris, Philadelphia Regional Director, PHRC
- Rep. Napoleon Nelson, 154th District, Montgomery County; Chair, Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus
- Rep. Darisha Parker, 198th District, Philadelphia; Vice Chair, Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus
- Stan Straughter, Mayor’s Commission on African & Caribbean Immigrant Affairs
- Ken Yang, Chief Executive Officer, Penn Asian Senior Services (PASSi)
The event will be moderated by Sheryl Meck, PHRC Civil Rights Outreach Director.
“These town halls empower people to share their experiences openly while gaining the tools to recognize, report, and confront discrimination,” said Meck. “Healing requires listening, understanding, and collective action. The PHRC is prepared to confront discrimination claims head on.””
