PHILADELPHIA – The Free Library of Philadelphia has announced the launch of its first Esports tournament for teens, the FLoP Bowl, organized in partnership with Nerd Street’s Localhost. This free event aims to promote fun, competition, and digital skill-building among young people ages 12 to 18.

Kelly Richards, President and Director of the Free Library, emphasized the institution’s commitment to offering innovative opportunities for youth. “FLoP Bowl is a chance for young gamers to challenge themselves and enjoy a supportive citywide competition. We are excited to see the energy and talent they will bring to the tournament,” she said.

The competition will feature the video game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch, with weekly matches scheduled from September 22 through December 8, 2025. Matches will take place at ten library branches across Philadelphia: Parkway Central, Fox Chase, Joseph E. Coleman Northwest Regional, Kingsessing, Lillian Marrero, Lovett Memorial, Lucien E. Blackwell West Philadelphia Regional, Philadelphia City Institute, South Philadelphia, and Tacony.

Rachel Hludzinski, Supervisor of the Teen Field Center at Parkway Central Library, highlighted the value of the program: “The FLoP Bowl gives teens an opportunity not only to compete in a fun and structured tournament, but also to gain valuable experience in the growing world of esports.”

Ben Beaver, Head of Youth and Scholastic Programming at Nerd Street, explained the importance of the partnership: “Nerd Street is committed to providing youth in Philadelphia with greater access to opportunity through gaming. This collaboration with the Free Library helps us advance our mission of bringing esports to everyone.”

Teens interested in participating must register in person at one of the participating branches, bringing either a library card or a student ID, along with a parent or guardian’s contact information.

In addition to the weekly matches, two in-person events will take place at Localhost: Midway Madness on Saturday, November 1, 2025, and the Grand Finals on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to 401 N. Broad St., Philadelphia.

Space is limited to three teams of six players per library, assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The winning team will receive a custom trophy, Free Library merchandise, and gift cards.
