Newsweek’s recent list of America’s Best Nursing Homes 2026 recognizes South Mountain Restoration Center, a long-term care facility serving older adults with significant behavioral needs, in the top 25 located in Pennsylvania. 

Harrisburg, PA – The Department of Human Services’ (DHS) South Mountain Restoration Center has been recognized as one of America’s Best Nursing Homes for 2026 according to a recent report from Newsweek. This accomplishment is only possible because of the hard work and dedication of DHS staff who operate the long-term care facility for residents with co-occurring behavioral health conditions and complex medical needs. 

“Providing the highest quality care to people living in our long-term care facilities is of the utmost importance to DHS. Every day our staff bring their best selves to help foster a caring, safe environment for residents navigating complex health needs and co-occurring disorders,” said DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh. “I am so proud of South Mountain Restoration Center’s hard work and dedication to our residents that has led to them being recognized as a top nursing home in the country.” 

South Mountain Restoration Center, located in Franklin County, is a 159-bed long-term care facility dedicated to providing compassionate, high quality care to its residents. The Center serves people with history of a serious mental illness and other behavioral health needs who may have previously gotten care at a state hospital or have been incarcerated. At the Center, residents receive specialized care for co-occurring disorders like dementia, along with chronic physical and behavioral health needs. The Center’s holistic approach to recovery-oriented care includes programs specially designed to enhance the quality of life of its residents and encourage independence.  

The America’s Best Nursing Homes 2026 report highlights the nation’s top 1200 nursing homes out of 14,752 analyzed. The evaluation is based on performance data, peer recommendations, accreditations and resident satisfaction. The report includes a state-by-state list of nursing homes that stood out for their commitment to safety, quality of care and resident well-being.
