Robert F Kennedy Jr’s False Claims About Vaccines Threaten Public Health

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s confirmation hearing on January 29th exposed his ill-informed views on many health-related topics, including Lyme disease, pesticides, and vaccines. Given the ongoing efforts by the new administration to discredit science and public health, I want to take a closer look at what he has said regarding vaccines during the hearing, what he has said or done in the past, and what his potential confirmation means for public health.

During the hearing, Mr. Kennedy Jr. claimed that the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) approved COVID-19 vaccines “without any scientific basis.” This is not accurate. The vaccines for COVID-19 are among the most studied and scientifically tested vaccines in history, with several large clinical studies demonstrating that the health benefits of these vaccines, which include reducing the risk of death from infection by the virus, far outweigh any risks or side-effects. In fact, hospital data have shown that unvaccinated people are more than twice as likely to die from COVID-19, compared to people who have been vaccinated.

When asked by a senator if he would not hesitate to reassure parents that the hepatitis B and measles vaccines do not cause autism, Mr. Kennedy refused to do that, and avoided the question by saying, “if the data is there, I will absolutely do that.” In reality, there are decades and decades of research (yes, data!) by researchers in the U.S. and beyond that shows that there is no scientific link between these vaccines and autism.

During his hearing, Mr. Kennedy Jr. attempted to distance himself from claims he made in the past against vaccines. He said that he was “pro-safety,” but not anti-vaccine. He also said that he had gotten all of his children vaccinated, even though he has said previously that he regrets doing this.

Any reversal of opinions by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. during his hearing was for the benefit of the media and those questioning him and does not reflect his true beliefs. Robert F. Kennedy is an environmental lawyer with little to no background in public health, healthcare or science. If Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is confirmed as the new secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (which appears to be case), it is likely that his anti-vaccine sentiments will influence the policy and positioning of DHHS, as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which he would also oversee. He can easily roll back vaccine research and manufacturing, while also continuing to weaken Americans’ confidence in vaccines through his communications.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also stated during the hearing that he would “do nothing…, that makes it difficult or discourages people from taking” vaccines. In the past, while he was leading the Children’s Health Defense nonprofit, Mr. Kennedy Jr. asked the FDA to reverse its emergency authorization of the COVID-19 vaccines and to not approve future vaccines. Thankfully, he was unsuccessful. As of November 2022, COVID-19 vaccines have prevented more than 18.5 million hospitalizations in the U.S., 3.2 million deaths and saved the nation $1.15 trillion in healthcare costs.

Vaccines are one of the strongest tools available to help prevent serious illness, complications and death. They are critical to ensure good health for our community, helping fight many common illnesses and new ones, like bird flu and monkeypox. Federal vaccination policies and programs protect the public’s health, while the “Make America Healthy Again” movement proposed by Mr. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, will do the opposite.

Afortunadamente, no tuvo éxito.

Snow Expected Across Much of PA Tuesday, PennDOT Urges Drivers to Exercise Caution

Snow Tuesday to be followed by sleet and freezing rain Wednesday

Go to 511PA.com or the 511PA smartphone app for the most up-to-date information on weather impacts and vehicle restrictions

Harrisburg, PA – Ahead of anticipated winter weather across much of the state Tuesday into Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is are advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise caution when driving. Additionally, PennDOT will implement various speed and vehicle restrictions throughout the storm.

Snow is expected to begin mid-morning in southwest PA, spreading east and north, followed by freezing rain throughout much of the state. PennDOT crews will actively pre-treat roadways where necessary ahead of the storm to help prevent ice from forming a bond with the pavement. However, salt does not resolve all risks, and drivers may encounter icy spots on the roadway. With freezing temperatures, roads that look wet may actually be icy, and extra caution is needed when approaching bridges and highway ramps where ice can form.

Restrictions are planned for certain vehicles during the storm, and will be communicated via variable message boards, the 511PA traveler information website and smartphone apps. Motorists can also sign up for personalized alerts on the website. Restrictions will be lifted as quickly as possible when conditions are safe. Restrictions can be changed based on conditions on the roadways, and reports from first responders, law enforcement and PennDOT and PA Turnpike personnel.

The following vehicle restrictions are planned to go into effect at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, February 11, in accordance with Tier 1 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan.

  • Interstate 76 from Toll I-76/I-276 to the Walt Whitman Bridge.
  • I-95, entire length.
  • I-295 from I-95 to the New Jersey border.
  • I-476 from I-95 to I-276.
  • I-676, entire length.

Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:

  • Tractors without trailers.
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
  • Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
  • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
  • Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
  • School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches.
  • Motorcycles.

While avoiding or delaying unnecessary travel during winter storms is the safest choice, PennDOT offers this advice if motorists must travel and encounter snow squalls or blowing or drifting snow:

  • Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits conditions.
  • Turn on your headlights. If caught in a snow squall, turn on your hazard lights.
  • Stay in your lane and increase your following distance.
  • Stay alert, keep looking as far ahead as possible and be patient.
  • Do not drive distracted; your full attention is required.
  • Use your defroster and wipers
  • Keep windows and mirrors free of snow and ice.
  • During whiteouts, come to a complete stop only when you can safely pull off the roadway.
  • Do not stop in the flow of traffic since this could cause a chain-reaction collision.
  • Do not pass a vehicle moving slowly or speed up to get away from a vehicle that is following too closely.
  • Always buckle up and never drive impaired.
  • Have an emergency kit handy. Here are some suggestions of what you could include in your emergency kit.

When winter weather occurs, drivers should be extra cautious around operating snow-removal equipment. When encountering a plow truck, drivers should:

  • Stay at least six car lengths behind an operating plow truck and remember that the main plow is wider than the truck.
  • Be alert since plow trucks generally travel much more slowly than other traffic.
  • When a plow truck is traveling toward you, move as far away from the center of the road as is safely possible, and remember that snow can obscure the actual snow plow width.
  • Never try to pass or get between several trucks plowing side by side in a «plow train.» The weight of the snow thrown from the plow can quickly cause smaller vehicles to lose control, creating a hazard for nearby vehicles.
  • Never travel next to a plow truck since there are blind spots where the operator can’t see, and they can occasionally be moved sideways when hitting drifts or heavy snowpack.
  • Keep your lights on to help the operator better see your vehicle. Also remember that under Pennsylvania state law, vehicle lights must be on every time a vehicle’s wipers are on due to inclement weather.

Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 151 crashes resulting in three fatalities and 55 injuries on snowy, slushy or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors.

The Pennsylvania State Police offers this advice if you are involved in a crash:

  • First and foremost, move your vehicle as far as possible from the travel lanes if it’s able to be driven. Remaining in the lanes of travel when your vehicle can be driven is extremely dangerous.
  • If your vehicle or another involved vehicle is not able to be driven due to damage, or if one of the involved parties is injured, PA law requires the crash be reported to police. Do this by dialing 911 right away.
  • If your vehicle is disabled in the lane of travel or stuck in the travel lanes due to snow or ice, remain inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on and hazard lights activated. If it’s not safe to remain inside your vehicle, assess the situation and get yourself and passengers to a place of safety such as behind a barrier or guardrail. When exiting your vehicle, move as quickly as possible and DO NOT remain in the travel lanes or near your vehicle.
  • When encountering a crash scene, the law requires you to move over if possible and always slow down. First responders will be active at the scene and focused on helping those involved in the crash and getting the road back open.

The law requires drivers to remove accumulated ice or snow from their vehicle, including the hood, trunk, and roof within 24 hours after the storm has ended. This applies to all vehicles, including commercial vehicles. Drivers in violation of the law are subject to a fine of $50. Additionally, drivers can be cited up to $1,500 if snow or ice is dislodged and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious injury.

Motorists should prepare for potential wintry weather by ensuring they have supplies in their cars before heading out: food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, cell phone charger, hand or foot warmers, windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies.

Pennsylvania governor tags an older prison and a boot camp for closure

HARRISBURG, Pa.— Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration is recommending the closure of Rockview state prison and the Quehanna boot camp, both in central Pennsylvania, amid longer-term national trends of shrinking prison populations.

The administration said on Monday it expects to save more than $100 million in future fiscal years, once the facilities are closed. Prison staff will be guaranteed a job offer at their existing pay and classification at a nearby correctional institution, the administration said.

It added that public comment will be accepted for three months before a final decision is made. The state’s 24 prisons are at about 82% capacity, according to Department of Corrections data.

Shapiro announced last week when he released his budget proposal that he would close two prisons amid steeply rising Medicaid costs.

The union that represents prison staff, the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, has said it will fight the closures and warned that closing two prisons will endanger officers and inmates. Violence in the prisons has dropped, in part, because the prison population is spread more evenly, the union said.

Still, half of all prisons were over 90% capacity last year and four were over 100% capacity, the union said.

Rockview, in Centre County, was built in 1915 and is the second-oldest state prison, the corrections department said. It has about 650 staff and houses about 2,100 inmates out of a capacity of more than 2,500, the department said.

Quehanna boot camp, in Clearfield County, is designed for lower-risk inmates and lacks traditional prison security measures, such as a fence. It has about 230 staff and houses about 350 inmates out of a capacity of about 600.

All told, state prisons hold just over 38,000 inmates, as of December. That figure has crept up in the past couple years, but is down from about 45,000 five years ago and 49,000 a decade ago, when many prisons were over capacity.

Shapiro’s predecessors closed three prisons over the past decade and opened one new one, Phoenix, in suburban Philadelphia. Shapiro’s administration also said it would close halfway houses, called community corrections centers, in Greene and Berks counties.

The Philadelphia Eagles are planning to celebrate their Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs with a parade on Friday, a team official and the city said Monday.

Eagles President Don Smolenski discussed the parade during an appearance on 94WIP sports radio, though the time and other details were not disclosed. He noted that the threat of severe weather in the region this week — including a potential snowstorm from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday — played a role in picking a date.

“Just watching the weather and we’ve got some snow coming this week, so we want to be respectful for the city to do what they need to do, Smolenski said. ”And one extra day of planning doesn’t hurt. You know what, it’s a nice way to kick off the weekend.”

Philadelphia mayor’s office confirmed the date later Monday. “We will release more details soon,» it said in a social media post. Before the game, officials in both Philadelphia and Kansas City had said they expected more security — and nerves — at Super Bowl victory celebrations staged in their cities.

Eagles fans came out in droves to celebrate the team’s win once the game concluded Sunday night, but police said no major problems or injuries were reported. Police made 10 arrests overall, including six people who were charged with assaulting officers.

City crews were still working late Monday morning to clear confetti, trash and other debris from some spots downtown area.

The city’s celebration following their win in the NFC Championship game last month was marred when a college student fell after climbing a street pole and died from his injuries.

The Eagles were expected to return to Philadelphia late Monday afternoon, and a large contingent of fans was expected to greet them.

Spagnuolo’s Super Bowl wizardry wilts as the Chiefs’ defense gets sliced up by the Eagles

Super Bowl

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had the worst season of his mostly distinguished coaching career when he spent Sundays on the New Orleans Saints’ sideline in the Superdome.

It was a house of horrors for him again in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night. They racked up 345 yards in a 40-22 rout to deny the two-time defending champion Chiefs a third consecutive Lombardi Trophy.

“Their pass game was rolling, you know. And at the end of the day, they just came out and played harder than us,” Chiefs star cornerback Trent McDuffie said. “Gotta take it on the chin and learn from it.»

Spags, as he is often called, entered this Super Bowl as one of the more talked about — and celebrated — figures in the game. He’d interviewed recently for head coaching jobs with the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Las Vegas Raiders.

With victories as a coordinator in four previous Super Bowls, Spagnuolo was seen as a master at using exotic blitzes to neutralize what opposing offenses do best. It worked against Houston quarterback CJ Stroud in the divisional round and Bills quarterback Josh Allen in the AFC championship game, and it helped the Chiefs beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl two years ago.

But while the Chiefs largely contained Eagles record-setting running back Saquon Barkley, holding him to 57 yards on Sunday night, Philadelphia found plenty of other ways to move the ball and score.

“They had a heck of a game plan. They executed. They outplayed us to a man,” Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis said. “It’s the reality of the game we play. It sucks. They played a phenomenal game. They had a great game plan. We needed to do more.”

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones was a non-factor before leaving the game with a knee injury in the second half, as was the entire Kansas City pass rush.

They failed to get to Jalen Hurts, whose 221 yards and two TDs passing included a 46-yard scoring strike deep down the middle to DeVonta Smith that helped to put the game away.

“Spags did a few different things; he had a couple blitzes in there,» Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “I thought the backs did a nice job — both of them — of picking the blitz up. And when we got through, (Hurts) moved, and they got some big plays.”

Hurts also rushed for 72 yards, and Kansas City’s defensive front was no match for Philadelphia’s tush push from the 1-yard line that gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead — one that they would never relinquish.

Hurts «played really well, and he was poised the whole game,” Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown said. “You know, he’s in control. And he made checks and he threw dimes and he just gave us opportunities. And when we were covered a little bit, he ran, used his legs.”

In the end, the Super Bowl was reminiscent of Spagnuolo’s lone season with New Orleans in 2012, when the 7,042 yards allowed by the Saints set an enduring NFL record for most yards allowed in a season.

Super Bowl delivers moving tributes, memorable action and a historic presidential visit

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40–22 in the first Super Bowl to be held in New Orleans in a dozen years. It was played amid heavy security — and with President Donald Trump in attendance — just 41 days after a man plowed a truck into New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street.

There were tributes before the game, and some big plays during it.

Here’s a look at some of the more memorable moments from Sunday night’s NFL title tilt.

Fly Eagles Fly

The Eagles convincingly captured the second Super Bowl trophy in franchise history while preventing Kansas City from achieving the first three-peat of the NFL’s Super Bowl era.

Hurts opened scoring on Philadelphia’s patented “tush push” play from 1 yard out in the first quarter. Rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean returned an interception 38 yards for a score and Hurts found A.J. Brown with a 12-yard scoring pass that gave the Eagles a stunning 24-0 lead at halftime.

The Eagles widened their lead to 34-0 in the third quarter on Hurts’ 46-yard scoring strike deep down the middle to DeVonta Smith before Kansas City finally got on the board.

“We were here to play the game and make sure that green confetti fell at the end,» Brown said.

Virtually all the Chiefs’ points were academic, but made Patrick Mahomes’ statistical line (257 yards passing and three TDs) look a lot better than they did after one of his worst first halves of football as a pro.

Defensive dominance

The Eagles held Mahomes to just 6 of 14 passing for 33 yards in the first half, and also became the first NFL team to sack Mahomes as many as three times and intercept him twice in the first half of any regular-season or playoff game.

DeJean, who also was celebrating his 22nd birthday on Sunday, made it 17-0 with his interception return in the second quarter.

He undercut a pass intended for DeAndre Hopkins and crossed most of the field before weaving his way through pursuing Chiefs players near the Eagles sideline during the final 5 yards of his return.

Late in the second quarter, former New Orleans Saints linebacker Zach Baun made a diving interception of a Mahomes pass at the Kansas City 14, setting up Hurts’ TD pass to Brown.

Philadelphia finished with six sacks of Mahomes, the most the Chiefs QB has taken in a game in his NFL career.

“We didn’t pressure much,” Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. «He’s so good against pressure that I was hoping we could play the game without having to pressure much — and that happened.”

Rushing record

Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley, the AP Offensive Player of the Year, completed the most prolific NFL season ever by a running back.

Barkley entered the Super Bowl needing 30 yards to break the record of 2,476 yards rushing set by Terrell Davis in 1998, when he helped the Denver Broncos win the Super Bowl.

Barkley had 31 by halftime and finished with 57 yards, giving him 2,504 yards in 20 games. Davis set his mark in 18 contests.

Presidential visit

Trump became the first sitting US president to attend a Super Bowl.

Trump spent a few minutes on the field before he headed to his suite to watch the game with Saints owner Gayle Benson, along with several lawmakers and family members.

After entering through a tunnel near the Chiefs’ end of the field, Trump greeted first responders and victims of the New Year’s Day attack in the French Quarter.

He was greeted with a mix of cheers and boos from fans.

As expected, Trump left the game after halftime.

Before Trump exited, Mahomes’ mother, brother and sister posed for a photo with him.

Kendrick Lamar

With actor Samuel L. Jackson serving as emcee and dressed like “Uncle Sam,» Kendrick Lamar opened his halftime performance crouched atop a Buick Grand National Experimental — the car for which his newest album, “GNX,” is named.

Dancers wearing red, white and blue came pouring out of the car and moved in sync to songs such as “Humble.”

Guest star SZA later joined Lamar for their slow-jam-style collaboration “Luther.”

Near the conclusion of his performance, Lamar transitioned to “Not Like Us,” which won him Grammys for song of the year and record of the year. The song also takes shots at rival artist Drake, who has sued the Universal Music Group record label for defamation over the track.

Big Easy bash

What is already considered Carnival season in New Orleans — it runs from Twelfth Night through Mardi Gras Day — was ramped up even more with a week of Super Bowl-related festivities.

The NFL Honors awards show was held at the historic Saenger Theater, where Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was named AP NFL Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season, and the Minnesota Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell was named AP NFL Coach of the Year.

But nothing, it seemed, was more talked about than 72-year-old former NFL coach Bill Belichick — now the coach of the North Carolina Tarheels — arriving on the red carpet with 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson.

Meanwhile, there were parties all over town, with several popular restaurants and cocktail bars — from Nina Compton’s Compere Lapin to the Columns Hotel and Hot Tin bar atop the roof of the Pontchartrain Hotel — rented out for Super Bowl visitors’ private events.

While there was a heavy law enforcement presence, it didn’t stop crowds from flocking to the famed French Quarter.

New Orleans flair

Pregame performances were highlighted by several musical artists from Louisiana.

Harry Connick Jr. performed a rendition of Professor Longhair’s, “Go to the Mardi Gras.”

Terence Blanchard joined the Southern University Band, nicknamed “the Human Jukebox,” to perform Teddy Swims’ «Lose Control.”

Trombone Shorty joined singer Lauren Daigle to perform “America the Beautiful,” and Jon Batiste sang “The Star Spangled Banner,” while playing a grand piano at midfield.

Somber remembrances

Shortly before the coin toss, New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan introduced local first responders who responded to the Jan. 1 terrorist attack on Bourbon Street.

Each of them held a photo of one of the 14 New Year’s revelers who died in the attack.

Family members of two of the victims — Tiger Bech and Matthew Tenedorio — were on the field as honorary captains.

“Together, we rise. Together, we heal. Together we will carry your memory with us forever,” Jordan said.

¡MAGA («Make America Great Again», la base trumpista) no perdona!», añadió.
