This past Saturday, September 20, Esperanza Immigration Legal Services (EILS) held its annual Citizenship Day, a community-driven event dedicated to supporting immigrants in the naturalization process in Philadelphia. Throughout the day, a team of volunteers and legal professionals assisted 18 individuals, helping them take necessary steps toward becoming U.S. citizens.

During the event, 11 naturalization applications were thoroughly reviewed. Among these cases, five applicants qualified to complete their interviews in Spanish, as they meet the age and residency requirements that allow them to do so in their native language.

The EILS team will continue reviewing and finalizing these applications, with plans to file them officially later this week. This ensures that each case receives the care and attention it needs to move forward successfully.

Anu Thomas, Executive Director of Immigration Legal Services of EILS shared: «It is such an honor for EILS to be part of your immigration journey. We are here to ensure that you have the best representation possible as you navigate the naturalization process. As more community members become citizens, our voices are strengthened and empowered to make collective changes.»

This event serves as a clear example of EILS’ commitment, as well as that of its volunteers, to Philadelphia’s immigrant community, offering not only legal support but also a welcoming and trustworthy space during a process that can often feel complex and overwhelming.

Anu Thomas said, “We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers and participants who made this event possible, reinforcing the spirit of solidarity and mutual support that defines our city.”
