SEPTA announces infrastructure improvements & preparations for FIFA World Cup 2026™

PHILADELPHIA.– SEPTA today announced its infrastructure improvements at NRG Station and other key locations in preparation for the thousands of FIFA World Cup fans expected to take the system to the matches.

The B [Broad Street Line] is the best way for fans to get to Philadelphia Stadium (Lincoln Financial Field) via NRG Station.

In order to ensure a good experience at the Sports Complex, SEPTA advanced some scheduled capital enhancements to NRG Station, including:

«SEPTA is ready to show that our first-class transit system is ready for world-class events,» said SEPTA General Manager Scott A. Sauer. «With SEPTA’s long-term funding still unsettled, we were strategic and cost-conscious when allocating resources for system improvements ahead of these events, and we managed to find a balance that will benefit customers for the short- and long-term.»

SEPTA has been a transit industry leader in pursuing naming rights agreements for its stations. These innovative sponsorships deliver improvements for customers while offsetting everyday costs. For the last nine years, SEPTA has enjoyed a great partnership with NRG.

«As a hometown energy provider, NRG is proud to support the city during this exciting summer and join partners like SEPTA to help keep this city moving,» said Keri Murschell, Director of Community & Sponsorship Marketing at NRG. «That same commitment drives how we show up every day for our customers and communities through continued investments across Philadelphia.»

SEPTA also made improvements to other stations that will be heavily used for the World Cup, America 250 events, the MLB All-Star Game, and other festivities:

FIFA SERVICE INFORMATION

SEPTA is providing additional service for the six matches, as well as the FIFA Fan Festival at Lemon Hill.

Metro Service on Match Days

For each match, SEPTA will offer extra B [Broad Street Line] trips to and from NRG Station. Airbnb is sponsoring free rides home from NRG Station that will begin at halftime and continue for two hours following the end of the match.

The expected ridership for each match is approximately 31,000, and SEPTA will be able to move about 15,000 people per hour on the B with the extra service and capacity. Riders should expect longer than normal lines at NRG Station.

On match days, the B and L [Market-Frankford Line] will operate overnight, with trains running every 30 minutes to select stations.

Regional Rail Service on Match Days

On match days, the last regularly scheduled trains will be extended on the Wilmington/Newark Line to provide service from Center City to Claymont Transit Center.

On June 19 and July 4, most Regional Rail lines will provide additional late-night service.

Bus Service for Fan Festival

SEPTA will provide additional service on Bus Routes 32 and 48, which serve the Lemon Hill area for the FIFA Fan Festival. Both routes will provide frequent weekday service, every 15 minutes or less, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

There will be SEPTA Transit police officers assigned to each match on game days. Units will be added to trains and stations. SEPTA encourages riders to utilize the SEPTA app to report safety and security issues discreetly.

EMPLOYEE AMBASSADORS

SEPTA is launching a new, hands-on customer service training initiative for all employees who will be out on the system assisting riders. More than 700 employees will cover over 1,100 ambassador shifts.

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE

More than 700 cleaners and maintenance personnel will be deployed strategically to keep stations and vehicles clean. SEPTA will also utilize new initiatives like «pit crews» that perform mid-route cleaning of B and L cars throughout the service day. Stations will be closely monitored during peak usage to address issues as soon as possible.
