Global Philadelphia Association to Host 10th Annual World Heritage City Celebration Honoring Ambassador David L. Cohen

PHILADELPHIA, PA — On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) will host its 10th Annual World Heritage City Celebration at the Crystal Tea Room, marking a decade since Philadelphia earned the distinction of becoming the first U.S. city designated as a World Heritage City. The event will run from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM and promises an evening of reflection, recognition, and cultural celebration.

This year’s celebration will honor David L. Cohen, former U.S. Ambassador to Canada (2021–2025), whose career spans law, diplomacy, and corporate leadership. Cohen is widely recognized for his contributions to civic life, diversity advocacy, and international collaboration. Prior to his diplomatic service, he held senior executive roles at Comcast Corporation and served as Chief of Staff to Mayor Ed Rendell.

“I am humbled to be recognized by an organization that plays such a vital role in strengthening Philadelphia’s position on the world stage,” said Ambassador Cohen. “It has been an honor to serve in the local Philadelphia community and to represent our country abroad, advocating for the global engagement, cultural exchange, and democratic values that define our city.”

The evening will feature a fireside chat with Ambassador Cohen, moderated by Andrea Mitchell, Chief Washington Correspondent and Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for NBC News. Guests will also enjoy a seated dinner and live cultural performances, creating a vibrant atmosphere that reflects Philadelphia’s rich heritage and global connections.

GPA President Zabeth Teelucksingh emphasized the significance of the milestone: “This year’s celebration is more than an anniversary—it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when cities lead with culture, diplomacy, and global vision. We are thrilled to mark a decade of World Heritage City status with the inspiring leadership of David L. Cohen and a community that continues to elevate Philadelphia’s international influence.”

The event is co-chaired by two of Philadelphia’s most respected civic leaders: Madeline Bell, President and CEO of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Daniel J. Hilferty, Chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor and last year’s honoree. Hilferty also chairs the host committee for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ in Philadelphia, further cementing the city’s global spotlight.

Representing the next generation of leadership are Young Professional Co-Chairs Martin Alfaro and Pailyn Singhapakdi. Alfaro, Founder and CEO of Alfaro Media Consulting, is an award-winning strategist and President of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ Philadelphia Chapter. Singhapakdi, President of Preserve St. Peter’s, is a civic leader committed to historic preservation and international dialogue.

As Philadelphia prepares to take center stage during the United States Semiquincentennial in 2026, the World Heritage City Celebration serves as a timely tribute to the city’s enduring legacy in democracy, culture, and global leadership.
