The program provides hands-on training and connects participants with career opportunities in the energy industry.
PHILADELPHIA — More than 200 people from communities across the region participated in PECO’s eighth Infrastructure Academy, a two-day workforce development program designed to prepare job seekers for professional opportunities in the energy industry.
Held September 22 and 23, the initiative gave participants an opportunity to learn about different career paths, strengthen their professional skills and connect with PECO employees and other industry professionals.
The program began September 22 at Philadelphia’s 23rd Street Armory, where activities focused on career readiness and professional development. Participants took part in mock interviews and received guidance to help them improve their performance during the hiring process.
As part of the first day, participants also connected with Beyond Literacy, an organization that partners with PECO on workforce development initiatives. The organization helps individuals prepare for professional exams that are often required for positions in various skilled trades.
The second day, held September 23, focused on hands-on activities and demonstrations led by employees from PECO’s Electric, Natural Gas, and Transmission and Substation organizations.
Through these activities, participants gained a firsthand look at some of the work PECO employees perform every day. The demonstrations included activities related to the work of lineworkers, natural gas technicians and other skilled professionals involved in operating and maintaining energy infrastructure.
The goal was to give participants a clearer understanding of the responsibilities associated with these positions and the skills needed to pursue them. They also had the opportunity to learn about different career paths within the energy industry and the potential to build long-term careers in the field.
“The Infrastructure Academy provides a unique opportunity for participants to learn about careers that help power our communities every day,” said Eric Nash, senior manager of Workforce Development at PECO. “By connecting job seekers with experienced employees and providing learning opportunities, we’re helping individuals build the skills, confidence and connections needed to pursue rewarding careers in the energy industry.”

The event also brought together Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, PECO executive leadership, workforce development organizations, community leaders and company employee volunteers.
Representatives and volunteers supported participants throughout the various activities and workstations, where they were able to ask questions, learn new skills and explore energy-related career opportunities available in their communities.
For PECO, connecting residents with these opportunities is also a way to strengthen the local workforce and expand access to skilled jobs. The company seeks to ensure that participants not only learn about available career paths, but also understand the steps needed to prepare for and compete for these positions.
Since its launch in 2020, the PECO Infrastructure Academy has helped more than 70 participants secure permanent positions with the company.
The program is part of PECO’s ongoing efforts to strengthen workforce development, create economic opportunities and help prepare the next generation of skilled energy professionals.
