Philadelphia is preparing for a major restructuring of its public transportation system. Starting August 24, 2025, SEPTA will eliminate and modify several bus routes, directly affecting neighborhoods in the Northeast and Center City, especially around 5th Street.

For many residents, the bus is their only reliable and affordable form of transportation. The cancellation of key routes could leave thousands without a way to get to work, school, or medical appointments.

 Routes affected near 5th Street:

Route 1: Serves areas in the Northeast, running along Roosevelt Blvd near 5th, 7th, and 9th Streets.

Route 12: Used to connect central and eastern neighborhoods, essential for workers and students.

Route 30: Crucial for those commuting between Center City and West Philadelphia.

Our community speaks up

Although many did not want to appear on camera or give their names, they did not hesitate to share their concerns.

“I waited nearly 45 minutes for the bus. If they cancel the route near my house, how am I supposed to get to school?” says Natalia, a young student from Northeast Philly.

“I don’t have a car or friends who can give me a ride. If they take my bus route, I can’t get to work. How am I supposed to support my family?” says Miguel, a construction worker who depends on public transportation.

These stories reflect the fear spreading through our neighborhoods. These are voices that, although not always visible, truly matter.

What can you do?

With these changes just around the corner, it’s important to review alternative routes, coordinate with your employer or school, and plan. The situation could change if new funding is approved, but for now, the service cuts remain.
